A disability walker and a hefty sewing machine were two large items brought to our repairers at the Payneham Repair Café in May, while a teddy bear and tiny tea lights were among the small items presented. The steady stream of visitors kept our repairers occupied all morning and the final tally lists 28 items altogether, 5 items unable to be fixed, 1 power board tested, one pair of secateurs sharpened, and the remainder, including clothing, electrical items and a banner, given a new lease of life. Another successful monthly event.

Adelaide folk must be delving into their winter wardrobes in preparation for cooler weather as the sewing section at the Payneham repair café in April was kept busy all morning. Pants and more pants, with rips, tears and wayward elastic, all got a new lease of life.
We looked at around 20 items altogether on the day and, apart from clothing, a bike, a CD player (yes some of us still use that piece of equipment!) and a clock were among the items repaired in the electrical and general section.
A number of visitors were given advice on the items they brought in, while others will be returning next month with spare parts or for fine tuning to finish the job: fingers crossed for a cute and colourful toy robot, a fan and secateurs minus a necessary spring.
Next repair café at Payneham will be on Saturday May 16

Recycle your small metals by keeping like-with-like! Small pieces of steel, such as bottle tops and jar lids, can go into a steel can.

🤔 Why can't we just put them into the yellow bin loose?

👉 Any small items (e.g. smaller than a credit card size) are difficult to recycle loose as they fall through holes in the conveyor belts at the MRFs (Material Recovery Facilities) and get lost. So we need to contain small items in something larger of the same material to ensure they are actually recycled.

❗️ Note that this trick only applies to steel lids (such as beer bottle lids and jar lids). Aluminium lids (e.g. wine screw-top lids) can be added to a foil ball and put into the recycling bin.

‼️ Unsure whether your lid is steel or aluminium? Try the magnet test! A magnet will stick to steel, but won't be attracted to aluminium.

â™»Metals are the most valuable resource that we can recycle in our kerbside bins. It saves a lots energy vs extracting new metal from the earth, and there is no loss in quality when recycled

Mending Woollies for Winter
Have you just pulled your winter woollies out of storage only to find HOLES?
Never fear, Judy from the Repair Café Payneham will show you her favourite ways to mend holes in woollen items using visible mending techniques such as:
• Needle-felting
• Honeycomb darning
We will supply:

• Yarn and needles for darning
• Practice holes
You should bring:

• Small scissors if you have them
• Patience
This workshop has very limited numbers due to the hands-on nature and limited space. Register now to book a spot. You cannot just turn up on the day

A steady stream of items came into the first Repair Café for 2026 at Payneham Community Centre.

Hefty items included a lawnmower and garden blower, a vacuum cleaner and food mixer; smaller items included a couple of lamps, cords, scales and a watch; while the sewing station dealt with clothing including a jumper, shorts and trousers. All were either fixed or advice given, apart from a battery charger, extension cord, air fryer and a toaster.

At the recent Payneham repair cafe, the sewing table was busy stitching up some costumes for the upcoming Norwood Christmas Pageant. Maybe you'll be able to spot them in the parade?

A wonderful session at Payneham repair cafe on October 18. Out of 29 tasks presented to the repairers, 24 were successfully fixed, and they included a coat rack, a trestle table, a heater and a computer keyboard, plus numerous items for sewing. Secateurs were sharpened, advice was given on a bicycle, work is still underway on a trolley, leaving only three items unable to be fixed - a radio and two cassette recorders. what a way to celebrate World Repair Day.

International Repair Day 2025

International Repair Day is an annual celebration for everyone who makes repair happen in their communities around the world.

Whether you’re a repairer, community organiser, tinkerer, maker, repair business, campaigner or simply a fan of fixing

CONGRATULATIONS

You are helping to bring our communities together, reduce our impact on the planet, learn new skills and so much more.
This is the power of repair.
Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday with your item small or large (as long as you can carry it in!) which is in need of a nail – or perhaps just the advice of a seasoned repairer.
