🌸 Happy International Women’s Day! 🌸

Today, AfriAus iLEAC proudly celebrates the strength, resilience, leadership, and brilliance of women across our communities and around the world.

We honour the women who lead, nurture, advocate, and inspire change every day — especially those in CALD communities who continue to break barriers, uplift others, and shape a more inclusive and equitable future.

At AfriAus iLEAC, we recognize that when women are empowered, communities thrive. Today and every day, we commit to amplifying women's voices, supporting leadership, and standing together for equality, dignity, and opportunity for all.

To the mothers, daughters, sisters, leaders, innovators, and change-makers — we celebrate you. Your courage and contributions matter. 💜

The power of community 💪🏾

In season and out of season, AfriAus iLEAC is honoured to step in as a channel of support for communities in need. On Tuesday 30 December, our team travelled to Shepparton to stand with the local Congolese and PNG communities following the tragic Muckatah incident.

A team of 5 volunteers ; 3 AfriAus iLEAC members and 2 GirlForce Vic Youth Ambassadors, delivered tailored, culturally appropriate food support and vouchers to assist families during upcoming funeral ceremonies in January and February.

The support included:
• Tailored food packs
• Food vouchers

This support will assist 50+ families, ensuring dignity and care during a deeply difficult season. We were assured the food and vouchers will be used directly during funeral services, as affected families currently do not have the capacity to host these ceremonies on their own.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Victorian State Government, through the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, for providing timely resources that enabled this response through the Harvest of Hope Mobile Hub.

Special appreciation to Cecilia Ndala for engaging AfriAus iLEAC and coordinating a very well-organised response, including the support of community Elders Henry and his colleague, truly hands-on leadership.

When communities come together with compassion, coordination, and cultural understanding, impact follows.

Together, we can go far.

Who makes the news shapes who matters. Media has a responsibility to represent women and girls, including women with disabilities, fairly, accurately, and without stereotype or distortion. Monitoring gender portrayal is a powerful tool for exposing bias, challenging harmful narratives, and shifting public consciousness. When women and girls are seen, heard, and valued in the media, society moves toward greater equality and justice.

Unlearning harmful gender stereotypes at home and school builds generations grounded in fairness, respect, and equality, reducing the likelihood of future gender- based violence. Being female does not mean volunteering.

Accountability an act of growth not shame. When men are supported to reflect, change, and take responsibility, cycles of harm break. Compassion and accountability can co-exist—and both are essential.

Respect begins long before a relationship starts. Teaching consent, boundaries, and mutual care prevents dating violence and nurtures healthy, equal partnerships. This includes affirming the rights, agency, and safety of women and girls with disabilities, who often face higher risks of abuse. Love cannot thrive where power and harm rule.
