Notwithstanding a heatwave, some strong winds and recent lightning, Owen CFS was fortunate when it came to call-outs this past month. We kept busy with preparation rather than response, with our brigade visiting our local Aerotech base. Aerotech is the base from which our support aircraft operate during fire season.

Did you know these planes can be airborne in less than three minutes from the call? And in the off-season, they switch gears to perform agricultural work, supporting primary producers across the region. A great insight into the speed, skill and versatility behind our aerial firefighting support.

Answering the Call, Year After Year

Last month, our own Jim Silkstone was presented with the 30-Year Clasp to his CFS Service Medal. For more than three decades, Jim has consistently answered the call — a remarkable commitment that is truly deserving of this recognition.

Thirty years of missed family moments, interrupted sleep, long nights, and standing ready when the community needed him most. Service like this does not go unnoticed, and it does not go unappreciated.

The CFS Service Medal itself embodies the Cross of Saint John, derived from the Maltese Cross. Its eight points represent the eight virtues of knighthood — values that firefighting organisations have embraced over time, reflecting courage, loyalty, and service above self.

This year Owen CFS have decided to do things a little different with all funds raised at our annual Quiz Night Fundraiser going directly to a good cause, Make-A-Wish Australia.

On 24 January 2026, Owen CFS, along with crews from Balaklava and nearby towns, responded to a house fire in Balaklava.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, though the home was sadly lost.

Watching volunteer CFS and SAAS members work together to extinguish the fire and protect neighbouring properties, it was a powerful reminder of the strength of our community — made even stronger by locals who dropped off food and drinks to support crews on the ground. Thank you 💛

On this day, we were lucky to have enough members available. That isn’t always the case. If you have some time to spare and want to give back in a meaningful way, please consider joining your local CFS brigade or SAAS station. Your community needs you.
