🐰💔 Shimmer & Smudge Need a Second Chance 💔🐰

Some stories are harder to tell than others.

Early in 2025, beautiful mumma bun Toffee arrived at Rabbit Runaway Orphanage with her young babies. Two of those babies, Shimmer and Smudge, grew up in our care and captured the hearts of everyone who met them. After waiting patiently for their forever home, they were adopted in early 2026 at around one year of age.

We thought their happy ending had arrived.

Then, in late March, everything changed.

Shimmer and Smudge were found huddled together beneath a lawn mower in the yard of a home near a walking track—approximately 1.5 kilometres from their adopted home. Thankfully, a kind member of the public noticed them and took them to a veterinary clinic. Because they were microchipped, they found their way back to us.

What happened?

We simply don't know.

Were they living outside and escaped? Were they enjoying outdoor time without supervision and got lost? Were their owners away and someone else was caring for them? Or were they deliberately abandoned?

The truth is, we may never know.

What we do know is that these two sweet souls survived because they stayed together. When frightened and vulnerable, they found comfort in one another.

✨ Shimmer and Smudge are gentle, affectionate and inquisitive rabbits.
✨ They have always lived as indoor rabbits.
✨ They adore each other and must remain together.
✨ They deserve a family who will cherish them for the rest of their lives.

As a rescue, our hearts break whenever one of our rabbits returns under circumstances like these. Rabbits are prey animals. The outside world is full of dangers—cars, foxes, dogs, disease, weather and countless risks they simply cannot understand.

Today, we're asking our community to help us write a new ending for Shimmer and Smudge.

A safe ending.

A loving ending.

A forever ending.

🏡 We are searching for an indoor home where these beautiful siblings will be treated as family members, kept safe, loved unconditionally, and never placed in an environment where they are vulnerable again.

If you have room in your heart and home for two deserving souls, please get in touch.

Because Shimmer and Smudge have already lost one forever home.

Let's make sure they never have to lose another.

We just got an amazing update on Lola and her new bun-husband Milo (formerly Max), and their story is such a huge reminder of why patience is everything with rescue buns.

At first, Milo was a bit of a challenge. He was getting super protective of his space during cleaning and feeding times. But after his new family kept things super calm and predictable, he totally relaxed.

The family who adopted him actually noticed he was bumping into walls and didn't seem to notice treats right in front of his nose unless they spoke to him. They are pretty sure Milo is actually visually impaired! His early defensiveness totally makes sense now. Once they started talking to him every single time they approached so he wouldn't get startled, everything changed. Now, he literally runs up to them when he hears them coming and absolutely loves head pats. 🥰

Milo and Lola are doing so well that they've started exploring the wider house together. Lola has been celebrating with the biggest zoomies and binkies ever! Plus, they have officially teamed up to escape their pen together on the regular.

We are so incredibly happy these two found each other, and so grateful to Abbey and her mum for taking the time to truly understand Milo's world.

Do you have a special needs bun or a rabbit who needs a little extra accommodation? How did you adapt your routine for them? Let’s share some tips in the comments! 👇

We just got an update from a family who is officially wrapped around their bunnies' paws, and we are so obsessed with the new names they picked out.

Meet Raymond (formerly Beethoven), who is basically a gentle old soul in a bunny suit, and Regina (formerly Powderpuff), a sassy queen who knows exactly how beautiful she is.

These two have their daily routine totally down. They love heading out to their undercover play area so much that they practically leap into their human's arms when it's time to go outside. Getting them back inside? Yeah, that is a completely different story. 😅 While Regina is busy burning rubber doing high-speed laps, Raymond is usually flat out and fast asleep.

When they aren't tossing around their favorite stuffed teddy bear, playing with stacking cups, or rearranging their digging box, they are discovering the absolute bliss of ear scratches. They went from being totally confused by head pats to leaning right in, grinding their teeth, and falling fast asleep. In fact, they were both actively climbing all over their human on the bed while this update was being written!

It is pretty safe to say they found their perfect match. 🥰

Regina loves a good toy flip, but what about your buns? What is the one toy in your house that your rabbit absolutely refuses to leave alone? Let us know below! 👇

Green flags only from our newly adopted queen, Molly. 🙂

Molly has only been with her forever family for a single week, but her roommate resume is already 10/10. Here is the official update from her new family on why she is the absolute perfect fit:

House trained icon: She worked with her humans to find the absolute perfect strategic placement for her litter tray. Teamwork makes the dream work.

Food motivated: Will definitely calculate her next move based entirely on snacks (highly relatable).

Outdoor explorer: Loves her supervised garden playdates, but the moment it’s time to head inside? She runs toward her humans, not away. 🥰

Professional cuddler: Will happily melt into your arms for long, uninterrupted snuggle sessions.

Honestly, we couldn't ask for a smoother transition into a forever home. Big thanks to Tamsin for giving this sweet girl the life she deserves and for spreading the word about rescue buns!

There are so many more bunnies like Molly ready to be adopted from the orphanage, so visit our website to learn more (link in bio)

💛🐰 A heartfelt THANK YOU to our incredible donors.

Rabbit Runaway Orphanage receives no government funding — every vet check, vaccination, desexing procedure, bale of hay, and bunny care expense is made possible by the generosity of people who care about rabbits in need.

Over the past few months, we’ve welcomed a large number of new bunnies into the rescue. Every one of them needs veterinary care to give them the healthy start they deserve — and we simply couldn’t cover those vet bills without the amazing people who support us, especially our regular donors who stand by us month after month, year after year.

Your donations don’t just pay bills — they change lives. They help vulnerable rabbits receive the care they need and give them a chance at a safe, happy future as beloved indoor pets. 🏡🐇

If you’d like to join these amazing humans and help support the orphanage, you can donate here:

You can make a one-off donation or become a monthly donor.

From all of us — and all the bunnies — thank you. 💛

EOFY Appeal – Ms Cookie 🐰💔
Ms Cookie is 3yrs old and arrived at the Orphanage with a painful jaw abscess that had grown too large to ignore.
Her owner loved her, but the cost of treatment was beyond them. They faced a choice of euthanasia or surrender.
So Ms Cookie was taken in by Rabbit Runaway Orphanage.
Despite her discomfort, Cookie remains the sweetest little soul. She greets us with gentle curiosity and trusts us completely as we help her through treatment. She didn't choose to become sick, and she certainly didn't choose the circumstances that brought her here.
But now Ms Cookie needs all of us.
As EOFY approaches, we are asking for your support to help cover the veterinary care that will give Cookie a second chance at life. Her treatment, surgery, medications and ongoing care are expected to cost close to $1,000 and her desexing vaccination, microchip about $450.
We can provide a safe haven, rehabilitation, and eventually loving new homes for rabbits like Ms Cookie. However, we receive no ongoing government funding and rely entirely on the kindness of our community to assist us with veterinary expenses.
Every dollar donated is a step towards a brighter future for Cookie and the many rabbits who arrive at our doors needing urgent help. Your support helps lift them out of the heartbreaking cycle of neglect, illness, abandonment and surrender that we see every single day.
No amount is too small.
💛 All donations are tax deductible. Please keep your receipt and note our ABN: 42 975 123 153 on your receipt.
Ms Cookie has already lost her first home. Let's make sure she doesn't lose her chance at a healthy future too.

💕🐰Mango & Lemon 🥭🍋🐇

Mango & Lemon are a sweet bonded pair who have already shown just how resilient little rabbits can be.

They were only 9 days old when they came into care after being handed in to a Vet, following the loss of their mother. With the help of a dedicated vet nurse and one of our amazing volunteers, they were carefully hand raised and supported through an incredibly difficult start to life.

Despite that rocky beginning, these two have grown into healthy, beautiful 6-month-old buns who are now ready for their next chapter.

Mango and Lemon are fairly quiet in nature, but still curious about the world around them and enjoy exploring their surroundings at their own gentle pace. They are a calm, sweet pair who find comfort in each other’s company.

Now safe, strong and thriving, they are ready to finally find a forever home where life is peaceful, stable and full of love.

EOFY Appeal – Wicket & Tyrian🐰💔
The email read… We are URGENTLY seeking help with two domesticated bunnies that were brought into our clinic after a member of the public found them in a cage on the side of the road, unattended & in dirty conditions, we are hoping for URGENT assistance…
Our volunteer set out to collect these bunnies. They were scared and their cage was filthy. Bless the man walking his dog who came across them. There was no hay or water left and we did not know how long they had been there.
As End of Financial Year approaches, we are asking for your help again.
Each rescue bun comes with a huge cost. Whilst we can provide a safe haven and care and eventually a loving new home, we rely solely on public donations to cover all the vet care needed to prepare these unwanted buns for their new homes. These little buns vet care will be close to $1000. Can you help sponsor them?
Every dollar donated is a step towards a brighter future for them. Your support ensures these buns are lifted out of the heartbreaking cycle we see every single day.
No amount is too small.
A donation today could help vaccinate a baby bunny, contribute to a desexing surgery, or provide lifesaving veterinary care.
💛 All donations are tax deductible. Please keep your receipt and write our ABN number on your receipt. ABN42 975 123 153.
Please help us prepare Wicket & Tyrian for their new start in life with people that will care for them.
