Help Oberon Men's Shed build new premises.
At this time of year, so many charities are appealing for your philanthropic donations. They want you to contribute to any number of worthy causes.
Here's a way to help locally:
Oberon Men's Shed has been looking after the health and well-being of local men for 17 years. That cohort of blokes have been supporting each other while being engaged fully in the local community. During that time, they have literally outgrown their current premises.
Your charitable donation to the Oberon Men's Shed achieves so much.
Your donation stays in Oberon.
Your donation will help erect a purpose-built shed in due course.
Your donation directly assists the health and well-being of all local men.
Your donation helps reduce the tax you must pay to the Government.
Discuss this charitable donation suggestion with your accountant or financial advisor.
The Oberon Shed is a charitable association and has that all important DGR status.
You can make that very important donation to the Shed in many different ways:
1. Direct credit our account. Details are:
Bank: CBA Oberon, NSW
BSB: 062-632
Account No: 1007-8177
2. Post your donation to PO Box 470, Oberon, NSW
3. Hand your donation directly to one of our volunteers manning the raffle stand outside IGA every Friday.
4. Set up a direct payment option and contribute a small amount on a regular basis.
When making that donation, please advise your name and email/address so we can send you that all important tax-deductible receipt.
Thankyou in advance.
Photo shows our members installing a ramp at the home of one of Oberon's disabled residents. This is just one of the ways we help out in the local community.

Compared to last Saturday, today was relatively calm.
Tuesday 9th June saw about 18 members turn up all full of anecdotes about how they spent the Kings Birthday Weekend.
The committee informed the gathering that the next step in the quest for land has gone forward with a report to Council. That report will be introduced into the next Oberon Council meeting for discussion.
A very important meeting will take place on Tuesday 23rd June. For blokes of our age, there's no fun in preparing for life in Aged Care. But it is something we must all face at some stage.
Mitch Hiam from Balance Financial Group will be speaking about the financial side of this important move that most of us will face.
Your committee strongly advises that you bring your wife/partner or carer along to make sure you get all the points he makes. If you have a particular question, could you put it in writing and give it to our secretary before the 23rd of June, so Mitch can directly address any concerns. He will stay on for lunch, so you will have an opportunity to speak with him personally if you wish.
This will undoubtedly be one of the most important presentations we have this year. Please tell all members of the Shed when you see them.
Next Tuesday, 16th June will see a visit from Stuart Torrance, Project Manager at the Australian Men's Sheds Association will be at the Shed. He will discuss the latest happenings in his part of the Men's Sheds world.
Punch Jackson from Edmonton Men's Shed, Alberta, Canada has published the following:
"Why should Communities advocate for having a men's Shed?
What are the benefits to a community?
Communities should advocate for having a men's shed because a shed is not simply a programme for men. It is a community - strengthening, preventative social infrastructure. A men's shed creates healthier, more connected, skilled and engaged citizens while reducing pressures on health, social and volunteer systems.
1. Reduced social isolation and loneliness
2. Better mental health and su***de prevention.
3. Healthier aging and seniors.
4. Stronger volunteer capacity.
5. Intergenerational connection.
6. A low-cost preventative investment.
7. Improved community connectedness.
8. Inclusion of men who often "fall through the cracks".
9. Economic and community development benefits.
10. A stronger sense of belonging."
Garry presented himself front and centre today to see what we really did in the shed. It seems that he will be joining shortly.
Clem was idly chatting away today when he said he once dated a girl who worked at a zoo.
She turned out to be a keeper!
Talking of Clem, he brought in some scones, jam and cream. He reckoned that he was up from the crack of dawn putting them together. We reckoned Clem was blowing wind up his you know what, and it was actually that wonderful cook behind him that did all the work. Thanks a million Coral; they were absolutely delightful.
Shirley also turned her hand to some home cooking yesterday and produced a beaut passionfruit and sultana cake as well as a chocolate cake.
Morning tea was delightful today.
Lunch consisted of a wonderfully aromatic thick potato and leek soup followed by a bread a butter pudding, definitely a crowd favourite. Sure keeps the blokes quiet if only for a short while! Many thanks to the peeler of the potato for turning out such wonderful winter warmers every week.
And as our wise philosopher says: "I'm on a seafood diet. I see food. I eat it."
Photos are from todays lunch. The Austin is owned by member, Ian. while the Chev Coupe was owned until very recently by member, Arthur.

Everyone knows where Woop Woop is, right?
Well, beyond Woop Woop is the kingdom of Fermanagh ruled by King Matt, Queen Megan and their two lovely Princesses Katy and Sophie.
This is the land where Militia reigns supreme and it was where the Oberon Men's Shed spent Saturday 6th June 2026.
Matt is a raconteur extraordinaire, a down-to-earth teller of all thing's tanks and their place in the various wars over the years.
About 20 of us Shedders went along for the experience joined by King Matt's loyal helpers, maybe 10 in total and joined later by a contingent of his close family, including Auntie Dawn.
The programme for the day was a tour of Matt's huge collection accumulated over several generations, stop for lunch supplied by the Shed, then a ride on one of his Matilda tanks, followed by afternoon tea supplied by Matts close relatives.
The photos tell the story, but after several hours of inspections with Matt's engrossing weaving of facts with hilarious tales, lunch was very welcome. Matt, his family and loyal helpers had spent many hours preparing for the visit and the sausage sizzle was devoured by a very appreciative bunch of blokes and their invitees.
We all stood by as the Matilda tank was unveiled. It's a fact that the lovely Princesses are also adept at using farm machinery and are following in Dad's footsteps.
For those who were able to clamber aboard the tank, a memorable ride ensued across the Kingdom's farmland.
Afternoon tea as supplied by Matt's close family consisted of the lightest scones, cupcakes, and slices imaginable all washed down with copious amounts of tea and coffee.
This day was by far one of the most memorable excursions held by the Shed. All members departed the kingdom well satisfied.
It seems the committee is going to be hard pressed to put on a better excursion than what we had just experienced.

The Federal Government's budget 2026/27 has now made it really tough to manage a business.
Equally it has made it much harder for associations to seek donations.
As tax time approaches, businesses large and small will seek to minimise the amount of tax they must pay.
One philanthropic way to cut your liability is to make a charitable donation that can be claimed as a tax deduction. But you should always verify that an organisation is registered as a DGR on the ATO's register before claiming.
Oberon Men's Shed Inc is one such organisation to consider.
Making that donation to the Shed has several advantages: you cut the amount of tax you have to pay; you keep your donation local; you help the Shed achieve its vision of building a purpose-built shed and you assist in the health and well-being of all local men.
There are a few ways to make that donation.
1. You can make a direct credit to our account. Details are:
Bank: CBA Oberon, NSW
BSB: 062-632
Account: 1007-8177
2. You can post your donation to PO Box 470, Oberon, NSW 2787.
3. You can hand your donation directly to one of our volunteers manning the raffle stand outside IGA, most Fridays
4. You can set up a direct debit and make regular donation throughout the year.
When making that donation please include your name and email/address so we can send you that all important tax-deductible receipt.
The Shed is very grateful for that donation, and we thank you in advance.
The photo is of a shed similar that in our vision.

Winter hit Oberon with a vengeance today 2nd June 2026.
Cold, driving rain greeted our members today, yet 21 of us arrived, wet and bedraggled. Hey, there must be something to this Men's Shed business if so many turn up on such a miserable day!
Good humour, coffee and tall tales but true and plenty of camaraderie were the order of the day.
We're a hardy lot, current temperature is 6c and with wind chill feels like 3c.
Missing, but wishing he was here was John. A call fresh from yet another operation proved he was in good spirits. With a good measure of luck, this latest surgical strike on his body might just get him over this current run of hospitalisations. As our resident guru says: "You're proof that tough people don't quit!"
So, who joins a Men's Shed?
The majority of blokes who join Oberon Men's Shed are in retirement, over 65 with others joining for all sorts of reasons, but usually for the friendship the shed provides.
All ages are welcome at the Oberon Shed. Many sheds are seeing fathers and sons coming along solely to do something together.
If you, your husband or partner are at a loose end, call in at the Shed any Tuesday and join in on the hospitality. Recent members of the Shed have found that the atmosphere, the friendship and the fun is just the ducks' guts and as a result come along on a regular basis.
Some sheds offer mentoring for teenage boys, some of whom are at risk of dropping out of high school. Older members guide the boys through an activity of their choice.
This is one of the activities we hope to offer in due course; we have had discussions with local schools who see a need for this activity. This will become one of our priorities once we have a much better workspace.
Frank, a local farmer, liked the atmosphere at the shed and elected to join the group during the week. Welcome Frank!
Wazza reckoned he saw a man collapsed on the Ferris Wheel at the Oberon Show. Paramedics on site said he was slowly coming around.
Photos are of 17 stayers for lunch chowing down on curried chicken, pumpkin, potatoes and beans followed by peaches and cream. Thanks again from our well cultivated paunches, Shirl. As she says: " I cook with wine. Sometimes I even add it to the food!"
Next, a restored Federal Truck owned by local Jim Perrott and lastly, member Arthur in character at an Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway event.
All Oberon and all local!

Here's a timely reminder that tax time is fast approaching.
A donation to a charitable association is a great way to minimise your obligations to the Federal Government. Check with your Accountant or Financial Advisor as you can only claim donations in certain situations.
Here's a couple of tips:
To claim a deduction for a gift or donation you've made, it must:
1. Be made to an organisation that has deductible gift recipient (DGR) status.
2. Truly be a gift or donation - meaning, you're voluntarily transferring money without receiving, or expecting to receive, any material benefit or advantage in return. In other words, you'll feel warm and fuzzy by giving the donation to help out a charitable association that works towards improving the health and well-being of all local blokes.
Oberon Men's Shed Inc is a charitable association with DGR status. A DGR is an association or fund that is endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office or listed by name in the tax law to receive tax deductible gifts or donations.
Progress continues on a dialogue to obtain land in town, and we now have concept plans of the proposed shed.
You can make a meaningful donation large or small depending on your circumstances to the Shed in the following ways:
1. Direct credit our account, details are:
Bank: CBA. Oberon, NSW
BSB: 062-632
Account: 1007 - 8177
2. Post your donation to PO Box 470, Oberon, NSW 2787
3. Hand your donation directly to one of our volunteers manning the raffle stand outside of IGA every Friday.
4. Set up a direct debit on your account and make a regular donation.
Don't forget to advise your name and address/email at the time of donation so we can send you that all important tax - deductible receipt.
As always, we thank you in advance.

26/05/2026

We thought we would start this post on Tuesday 26th May 2026 by implanting an ear worm.
We'll bet you can't get rid of it after reading the following:
"I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line"
So, while you're trying to get that tune out of your head, let's have a look at what we did today.
Oberon turned on a typical autumn day, misty, rainy and a bit chilly, so the gathered throng spent most of the day around the pot belly chatting with great enthusiasm about everything from getting the budget back on track to solving the Iranian War.
In the midst of all the chiacking about whether Wally looked like Grizzley Adams, Kenny Rogers or Billy Connelly, Alan stopped by and became a new member on the spot.
Welcome to the Oberon Men's Shed, Alan.
Fresh from his starring role in a new movie, "Kockroah," with co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Alec Baldwin, Doug tells us he's about to appear in another film being made about a bakery. He'll be playing a small roll!
A recent article by Compass, an EAAA project building action on elder abuse says of Men's Sheds that they can reduce isolation and elder abuse risk.
"As they grow older. many Australian men face unexpected challenges. When the regular social contact that work provided them ends suddenly through retirement or redundancy, there's a gap in life that's not always easy to fill. They can become isolated, lose self-worth and experience a decline in mental and physical health - and, as research is now showing, isolation increases their chances of experiencing elder abuse.
So where can a fellow go to find a comfortable community for himself? One answer could be the local Men's Shed.
The are three top messages about isolation and Men's Sheds:
1. Being socially isolated increases an older person's risk of experiencing elder abuse.
2. For many Australian men, retirement ends their social networks, and they find it hard to establish new ones.
3. Men's Sheds are located all round Australia and provide a great opportunity to rediscover purpose, social contact and the art of talking deeply."
This is one of the exact reasons Oberon Men's Shed was established all those years ago. Our Shed is a safe space where all local blokes can come to work on a project, tinker or just have a cuppa and a chat. It's us and it works!
The Oberon Shed is a great place for newcomers to town to find and make new friends in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
Our famous author and member Peter told us all he was reading a great book, recommended by his book club friends, about an immortal dog. It was impossible to put down.
Talking about immortals, our purveyor of the fricassee, served a wholesome rich pumpkin soup followed by an old-fashioned bread and butter pudding. Just the meal for a day like today.
Thanks from the stomach, Shirl!
One last comment for Johnny Boy - We hope you can feel the good thoughts we're sending your way. Here's to a steady and full recovery.

Time to make an important donation to charity!
Oberon Men's Shed Inc is a charitable association with the ability to issue tax-deductible receipts.
Tax time is fast approaching and it's time to have a conversation with your Accountant or Financial Advisor about reducing your taxation liability.
Let's face it, why give a large percentage of your hard-earned income to the Government when you can reduce your liability, keep your money local and assist an association concerned with the health and wellbeing of all local blokes, all at the same time.
A meaningful and affordable donation to the Shed will help secure its vision of providing a purpose-built new shed for future generations. As we say, today's schoolboys are tomorrow's men's shed members.
The Shed's committee is in continued dialogue with Oberon Council to secure a suitable block of land and concept drawings are being worked up.
The Oberon Shed has outgrown its current facilities, and we are committed to continue to encourage and support all men of all ages to live full, active and independent lives by simply providing a new and improved space for them - a better purpose-built shed.
A meaningful donation large or small can be made in the following ways:
1. Direct credit our account. Details are:
Bank: CBA Oberon, NSW
BSB: 062-632
Account: 1007-8177
2. Post your donation direct to PO Box 470. Oberon, NSW 2787.
3. Give your donation direct to one of our volunteers manning the raffle stand outside IGA every Friday.
4. Set up a direct debit and make a regular donation.
When making that donation don't forget to include your name and address/email so we can send you tax-deductible receipt.
You will receive permanent acknowledgement at the new shed in due course.
The shed depicted is similar to our vision.

What's on our mind this lovely Autumnal Oberon Day, Tuesday 19th May 2026?
Whilst the weather mightn't have been the best, inside the Shed it was positively alive with chatter, good humour and warmth. The warmth didn't just emanate from the pot belly stove in the centre of the Shed but more from the wonderful companionship we generate week on week.
For inspiration, today we draw on the UK Men's Shed's Association and the Tasmanian Men's Sheds Association Inc. This inspiration proves that no matter where you are in the world, Sheds provide that warmth and camaraderie we experience here in Oberon every time we meet.
People come to Men's Sheds for many different reasons.
Some come for the woodworking, others to learn new skills. Some come for the cuppa, conversation and camaraderie.
But whatever brings people through the door, the positive impact that Sheds can have on well-being and community is clear:
96% of Shedders felt less lonely after joining a Men's Shed.
89% reported feeling less depressed.
75% reported feeling less anxious.
97% made new friends after joining a Men's Shed.
88% felt more connected to their community.
At UK Men's Sheds Association, as here in Oberon, we see every day how important connection, purpose, friendship and community can be.
And as the Tasmanian Men's Sheds Association Inc says: "you might not need a Men's Shed now... but isn't it great to know that they will be there when you do."
Here's a message for all local blokes: don't be shy, pop over to the Shed any Tuesday and discover the friendship for yourself. After all our members made this step at some stage in the past.
Bull was a bit unhappy when he arrived, roaring: "To whoever stole my camouflage jacket and my thongs.... you can hide but you can't run."
Meanwhile, Noel said that he just found out the company that produces yardsticks won't be making them any longer.
So, to the highlight of the day when all of us start thinking with our bellies, lunch turned out to be Spag Bol followed by peaches and ice cream. This is always the quietest time of day and for that we can only offer thanks to the fettler of fine foods, the one and only Shirl.
A special mention about John; he hasn't been having the best of times lately, remains in hospital after enduring yet another lengthy operation. He seems to be in fine form, but a little worse for wear, all things considered.
If in doubt....Don't....wait and get more and better advice. Measure twice....cut once! That no doubt applies very much to old Johnny Boy!
Photos are of some vehicles driven by our members and found in the carpark today as well as a couple of fantastic gatherings that have occurred during the last year.
