This property in Gulmarrad is unique for its ecological significance, biodiversity and supporting old growth trees. Our ecologists have identified over 73 native plant species, 44 Glossy Black Cockatoo feed-trees, 5 species of native orchids and more than 70 species of fauna on the property, including some of our most vulnerable to extinction: Glossy Black Cockatoos, Rufous Bettongs, Coastal Emus, Squirrel Gliders, Barking and Powerful Owls, Square-Tailed Kites, Grey-Crowned Babblers & White-Bellied Sea Eagles. If lost to development, this forest and all the life it supports may disappear forever. By purchasing it, we will make sure this diverse ecosystem remains protected permanently as a conservation reserve open to the local community and managed according to the best available science and highest standards.

We're acting today to save critical threatened species habitat for generations to come, but we need your help to make it happen. Dozens of hollow-bearing trees, 43 Glossy Black Cockatoo feed-trees, over 73 species of native flora and over 70 species of native fauna all at risk from destruction and clearing. By acquiring it, we want to make sure this diverse forest remains protected permanently as a conservation reserve open to the local community. You can help us make it happen by visiting our website and making a tax-deductible donation today: https://www.wpcv.org/championcampaign

This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to do something that genuinely matters: permanently protecting an ecosystem, the diverse understory, native grasses, orchids, the old-growth, hollow-bearing Eucalypts towering overhead and the threatened species that depend on it, before it is lost by thousand cuts.

Wildlife Preservation Clarence Valley (WPCV) is a community-led, conservation land-trust. We operate within the Clarence Valley LGA to identify, acquire and manage areas of high biodiversity and ecological value. We are a registered charity with deductible gift-recipient status (DGR).

Wildlife Preservation Clarence Valley (WPCV) is a community-led, conservation land-trust. We operate within the Clarence Valley LGA to identify, acquire and manage areas of high biodiversity and ecological value. Part of the Macleay-McPherson overlap, where tropical and sub-temperate species meet, the Valley has truly extraordinary natural richness to enjoy and preserve.

Under our ownership and care, properties we acquire are protected in perpetuity and managed according to the best available science and highest standards. We use internationally recognised frameworks like the Open Standards for the Practise of Conservation and the Society for Ecological Restoration Australia's National Standards for the Practise of Ecological Restoration to evaluate, plan and effectively manage our properties.

WPCV is a registered DGR charity, meaning all donations are tax-deductible and create lasting legacy through the strategic acquisition of important ecosystems within a biodiversity hotspot of global significance.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the dedicated mums out there!

Whilst observing a family trio of Glossy Black Cockatoos feeding on the Gulmarrad corridor, WPCV members were treated a special and very intimate moment in the life of these birds threatened with extinction. Not only did they come down to drink in a puddle only 3 meters from us, they then landed in the tree above our heads and let us observe mum feeding her juvenile hen so close to us that we could hear the two beaks clacking against each other!

This is why we’re campaigning to save this property from imminent clearing and subdivision. Our local Glossies can’t afford to lose it, nor can the 8 other threatened species found there.

Field work always has surprises.
Sometimes you reach for a branch, and you get a bearded dragon.

This week, we started our formal assessment of the Pulganbar rainforest property.

WPCV volunteer members spent 2 days auditing fence lines and "scoring" the property. We used a preliminary criteria to determine the conservation potential, manageability and financial requirements for restoring and maintaining the land in the future. We then assess ecological integrity using the Society For Ecological Restoration’s 5 point Recovery Wheel framework. All of this guided by SERA’s national standards for conservation and the international Open Standards for the Practise of Conservation.

🧪 We saw the churned earth and demolished trees on a neighbour's property, along with the effects of chemical spray, and spray drift, which had killed native plants across the fence boundary. Another reminder of the many anthropological pressures on our natural systems and why conservation efforts are so important.
🦎 Victor picked up a fallen branch to move it off of a fence line, and jumped back! He'd picked up a bearded dragon wrapped around the the branch!
📸 we set up photo points in different plant communities across the property to monitor change through time.
🐨 we spotted a resident koala through our trail cameras for the 4th time!

A day walking amidst rare subtropical and dry rainforest with friends and colleagues is a special day. Find out more about this property and our other projects here: https://www.wpcv.org/land-projects/project-two-ky966-83s5a
