No longer an emerging risk, and our first responders are absorbing the impact.

🩺 No specific health monitoring for Firefighters
🏥 No testing processes or doctrine
🚒 Resource and training limitations

We've been calling for adequate, and holistic, health and wellness for over a year in response to the hazards posed by these emerging risks - but a review into the matter has not yielded any tangible outcomes.

What will it take to look after those that look after us?

Recently, we celebrated 100 years of our Union Office Building; the heritage listed former North Perth Fire Station, built in 1926.

The architect was K.C. Duncan, also a volunteer fire fighter, who was responsible for most of WA's fire stations constructed during the 1930s and 40s.

The Fire Station closed on 28 November 1956, becoming a training school and electrical workshop from 1957-62. In 1963, the building was sold into private ownership until it was purchased by us in 2009, becoming the home of the United Professional Fire Fighters Union of Western Australia.

The building continues to serve the community by looking after the industrial needs of our members - WA's Career Firefighters, including Applied Training, Built Environment Branch, Communications Centre and District Officers, as well as Superintendents and Chief Superintendents.

Today, however, we found ourselves in need of alternative facilities due to power upgrades in the area. A special thank you to Volunteer Fire & Rescue Services Association of WA Inc for allowing us to share their building for the day.

Wishing Station Officer Mel Ismail all the best on his post-shark attack journey!

A shark that attacked surfer Mel Ismail near Geraldton last month has been identified as a white shark.

The off-duty firefighter survived the ordeal at Glenfield beach but lost his leg below the knee.

Research scientists from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development have examined evidence, and determined a white shark estimated at approximately three metres, was involved.

When Mr Ismail was asked last week if he wanted to know what type of shark had attacked him, he said it was not of great importance, but noted it had a “big, black eye.”

Western Australia needs you to be Fit for Duty. We all need you to look after yourselves, and each other, so that you can be there for the community when they need you the most.

Nobody is coming to rescue the Career Fire and Rescue Service, so it's down to us all to be Active in Our Own Rescue...

Some harrowing and superhuman stories from this year's Royal Life Saving Bravery Awards, including one from our very own Morgan Cooper, who received the highest bravery honour, a Gold Cross, for his efforts at a serious bus crash in Wanneroo whilst off-duty.

A mother who revived her toddler after a near-drowning and an off duty DFES officer who rallied bystanders at a fatal bus crash are among dozens recognised at the Royal Life Saving Bravery Awards.

Thinking of our members who rescued an unconscious casualty from a house fire in Wembley Downs last night.

Often our members are unaware of the outcomes of their rescues, and we hope that their desperate efforts last night have resulted in a positive outcome.

Our thoughts remain with the casualty, their family and friends today.

Reminder that support is available through Psychological Support Services, peer supporters and our Union Office.
