Ulladulla High School School welcomed back their former school captain Luke Puglisi share his career journey and experiences as a Senior Site Supervisor.

With more than 16 years of experience, Luke has worked across a range of roles including Manager/Supervisor, Shotfirer, MPU Operator, and Trainer Assessor.

Speaking with a group of Year 9 mathematics students, he provided valuable real-world insight into the importance of basic maths skills in his daily work within the mining industry.

Students learned how mathematics is applied in the context of mining in areas such as ratio mixing for different blast requirements, measurement and drill depth assessments and practices, and estimating distance, height, and depth in the field. Luke also shared how strong mathematical understanding supports safety, precision, teamwork, and productivity when managing large teams and working on some of Australia’s largest mining operations.

The students were highly engaged throughout the session, asking thoughtful questions about the work life challenges of the life of a miner, careers in mining and the pathways that can lead to opportunities in the industry from the school leaver level.

Acclaimed contemporary artist George Raftopoulos recently returned to Randwick High School in Sydney as a guest of the school’s alumni program. George helped the students in the school’s Monday afternoon Art Club plan a new mural for the school. The collaboration celebrates the strong connection between past and present students.

Randwick High School is part of the rapidly expanding network of Ourschool partner schools in New South Wales. With more NSW schools joining in Term 2, we’re currently recruiting for five alumni program coordinator roles in Sydney. We’re also recruiting for a Sydney-based alumni program manager to lead our NSW team.

The new alumni program coordinators will be based at Pittwater, Ryde Secondary College and three Northern Beaches Secondary College campuses – Freshwater, Cromer and MacKellar Girls

Alumni programs in public schools allow former students the chance to build long-term relationships with their schools and make meaningful contributions.

As part of the alumni program at North Geelong Secondary College, David Posterino (class of 2003 and founder of AS Wealth Advisors) returned to the school numerous times to share insights. During his most recent visit in March, he talked to the VCE VM Numeracy class about interest, investing, and superannuation.

Last year David also sponsored a new Excellence in Sport Junior Scholarship for North Geelong Secondary College. Reflecting David's own ambition as a student to be an AFL footballer, the scholarship may be used to pursue sporting activities outside of school or to acquire new equipment.

The inaugural recipient Archie was recognised for his leadership potential, as well as his dedication and commitment to school lunchtime sporting activities.

“I didn’t know there were so many different types of law. I learnt that if I’m not interested in one type, I could be interested in another,” said a year 10 student from one of our partner schools, following the recent industry insights session Ourschool held in partnership with Maurice Blackburn Lawyers.

The session took place at the law firm’s Melbourne office, with students attending from Balwyn High School, Hallam Secondary College and Koonung Secondary College.

All the Maurice Blacburn employees who shared their insights during the session are themselves public school graduates.

Next up in our postcards series is Viewbank College in Melbourne. The school was established in 1994, following the merger of Rosanna East High School and Banyule High School. Viewbank College began partnering with Ourschool earlier this year.

Recently four alumni returned to share their insights with current Year 10 group ahead of this term’s work experience placements. The alumni guests included one of the school’s very first Year 7 students, Andrew Meiliunas. Andrew is now Associate Director at Nevett Ford Lawyers and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University Law School.

Another member of the alumni panel, Sara Tatlow, was also one of Viewbank College’s first students, having moved there from the former Banyule High School as a Year 9 when Viewbank College first opened. Sara is a clinical psychologist and coordinates a specialist team at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Andrew and Sara were joined by journalist Lakshmi Ganapathy (class of 2017) and the founder and director or the web development and marketing agency RankRise, Will Qu (class of 2013).
