Ourschool is a not-for-profit service helping former public school students connect with their old secondary schools to benefit students and strengthen their school communities.

Right now, the high school student leaders for 2027 are taking up their new roles.

Alumni from Ourschool partner schools, who themselves held leadership roles in high school, have returned to their old schools to share insights with the new student leaders.

This is yet another way alumni programs are strengthening school culture and supporting students.

Ryde Secondary College: 2022 College Captain, Dheeraj Thadani, joined Ryde’s 2027 Captains Selection Panel. Working alongside the school's principal, Cassy Norris, Dheeraj helped interview and select the next cohort of college captains and vice captains.

Randwick High School: At the Student Representative Council (SRC) Investiture Assembly, public affairs advisor Tanna Klevansky shared her leadership wisdom and experience with the next generation of RHS leaders.

Elisabeth Murdoch College : 2023 Vice Captain Amelia joined current college captains and future student leaders to discuss life after graduation and the many pathways available.

How are road trailers designed and built, and what career opportunities exist behind the scenes?

This week in Ballarat, Ourschool partnered with leading Australian transport manufacturer Freighter Group to give students from one of our partner schools, Mount Rowan Secondary College, a look at the world of advanced manufacturing.

Students explored the technology, robotics and industrial design involved in producing road trailers, while learning about the wide range of skills and career pathways that keep the industry moving.

For students exploring their future pathways, the visit was a valuable opportunity to challenge assumptions about manufacturing and discover careers they may never have considered.

A huge thank you to the Freighter Group team for welcoming Mt Rowan Secondary College students and sharing their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for the industry.

Peter Doherty shared the 1996 Nobel Prize for medicine with Swiss colleague Rolf Zinkernagel, for their discoveries about transplantation and “killer” T cell-mediated immunity, an understanding that is currently translating into new cancer treatments.

Thirty years later, he remains active in research on immunity to flu, commuting between St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis and The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity at The University of Melbourne.

Laureate Professor Doherty is an alum of Indooroopilly State High School in Brisbane.
He has spoken out in favour of Ourschool’s work to establish alumni networks in public high schools in Australia, saying: “Support Ourschool, because you can help strengthen our public high schools.”

Scientist and business woman, Alison Duguid, received the 's Darwin Innovation Hub’s 2026 Croc Pitch award in recognition of her work as a commercial seaweed farmer.

Alison, from Darwin High School class of 2012, is a chemical engineer and founder of North Australian SeaCulture, a company developing seaweed supply chains in regional Australia to service a range of industries.

Earlier this year she returned to Darwin High as part of the alumni program the school is establishing with support from Ourschool. Alison shared her insights with current students during two sessions, a lunchtime chat and a combined Chemistry and Business Class session.

The end of Year 12 is just around the corner for the Class of 2026!

Who better to inspire, reassure and demystify the exam experience than those who have recently been through it themselves?

To support Year 12 students as they prepare for the final stretch, Ourschool alumni program coordinators have organised a range of dedicated alumni sessions at different times during the year:

- Koonung Secondary College:
Alumni from the Class of 2025 shared study tips and techniques. (Alumni: Derek Liau, Clio Vassilades, Molly Doyle, Bridget Dods, Isaac Brodie and Kyara Li Yuen Fong.)

- Randwick High School:
During a special ‘Life Ready’ HSC exam tips and advice session alumni shared stories of resilience and finding their path. (Alumni: Unnati Kaur, Maisha Sarwar, Anthony Katz, Ella Gardner, Tamsin Colley PLY, Zali Cole and George Raftopoulos.)

- Point Cook Senior Secondary College:
Year 12 ‘History Revolutions’ exam session.
Alum Athena Hoang hosted an exam prep session, looking at concept maps, focal study areas and how to best use reading and writing time in exams.

- Viewbank College:
Graduates from 2024 and 2025 (Bailey Lawton, Ben Wilson, Hannah Haynes, Kristian Robinson, Riley Snowdon, Tara Russo and Vista Ghalehbeigi) returned to the school to share their revision and exam prep strategies.

- North Geelong Secondary College:
Human Resources Manager Evelyn Wiese ran a session on interview techniques and tips in preparation for the VCE Vocational Major interviews.

- Berwick College:
The year 12 cohort heard from 2024 alumni Tarran Frost, Antonio Oshana and Bayley Burton, as well as 2025 alumni Logan Burton, Charlee Lancaster and Miquella Jacobsen. They discussed study routines, staying motivated, balancing commitments, exams and life after school.

- Lyndale Secondary College:
2025 school captains Milan Vujicic and Mahnoor Nabeel, along with Neshat Rahimi and Madina Mohammad also from the Class of 2025, offered practical study and exam tips and discussed scored and unscored pathways.

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the largest centre dedicated to cancer research in the southern hemisphere, was the venue of our latest industry insights excursion for students from the public high schools we partner with.

This was the sixth time since 2019 that Peter Mac joined forces with us to host such a session.

Students toured the hospital and spoke to Peter Mac employees, learning about career options in the health sector and potential pathways into those careers.

“The amazing conversations with the Peter Mac staff helped me understand the options that are available to me,” said a Year 11 student from Pascoe Vale Girls College.

A Year 11 student from Cranbourne East Secondary College said: “Hearing from different Peter Mac staff about their stories and how they got into each of their careers made me more confident about my future.”

The schools involved in this year’s Peter Mac excursion were Cranbourne East Secondary College, Frankston High School, Koonung Secondary College, North Geelong Secondary College, Pascoe Vale Girls Secondary College, Point Cook Senior Secondary College and Viewbank College.

Thank you to the Peter Mac employees who made the day possible, many of whom are public school alumni themselves: Jean Moselen, Florence Panaccio, Therese Chesson, Nina Colon, Kira Hughes, Dunithi Samarasekera, Kaitlin Whelan, Jason Carpio, Isabella Angelico, Bonnie Lawler.

Internationally renowned tech house producer Dom Dolla played a sold-out show at Marvel stadium at the start of the Grand Final weekend.

Performing in front of a crowd of 60,000, the former Kew High School student declared: “Melbourne, it’s great to be home!”

Two days later Kylie Minogue, an alum of Camberwell High School (CHS), brought him onto the field at the MCG for a surprise cameo performance during her Grand Final show. Dressed in high vis, Dom Dolla pretended to use light batons to direct Kylie as she descended to the ground in a cage suspended over the MCG. She then performed his remix of “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”.

When we collated our Semester 1 data across alumni programs in our network, for the first time we also collated the industries that our alumni guests come from.

The industries highlight the broad range of careers represented in alumni career pathway sessions held in classrooms across our partner schools.

Author Tim Winton is known for the way his books capture Australian language and evoke Australian landscapes. The four-time Miles Franklin award winner is an alum of Albany Senior High School in WA and was the first in his family to finish high school.
