Why Red Gum Swing?
The city of Adelaide is situated on the traditional lands of the Kaurna people, with the River Torrens/Karrawirra Parri running through it.
In Kaurna language, Karrawirra Pari means "red gum forest river". This river spans 85km from Mount Lofty Ranges all the way to West Beach.
For generations, the river provided food, shelter, water, and connection for Kaurna people. Today, people still use it to gather for community events or with friends, and connect with nature and Country in many ways.
The Adelaide Hoppers and Swing Dance Adelaide wish to honour and respect the traditional owners of the Country we host our event on. By using this feature of the natural landscape in the name and choosing venues nearby the river, we aim to acknowledge the deep cultural connection Kaurna people have to this location.
