DRIVE SAFE VISIT CANCELLED
We are disappointed to announce that DriveSafe NT has advised it is cancelling its upcoming visit to Wadeye and Peppimenarti due to concerns about “unrest.”
TDC does not support this decision and will be raising our concerns directly with the Northern Territory Government.
At present, we do not consider the general level of risk to be materially greater than what is routinely managed in Wadeye. While there may be isolated areas or individuals associated with particular incidents, this should not automatically translate into a community-wide assessment that Wadeye is unsafe.
The consequence of these cancellations is that the overwhelming majority of residents — people who have nothing whatsoever to do with the fighting — are repeatedly denied access to important services because of the actions of a small number of individuals.
We apologise to all local jobseekers and community members who were looking forward to accessing DriveSafe services next week and who are impacted by this decision.
Our team has been working incredibly hard to get 200 individuals assessment-ready, putting in significant time and effort to ensure people are prepared and able to take the next step towards getting their license.
TDC will continue advocating for a consistent, proportionate and evidence-based approach to assessing risk, so that essential services can continue wherever it is safe and reasonable to do so.
