The things one learns and relearns is always relevant both historically and today.
In the words of Walter White in the “Breaking Bad” series… this is not m**h.
Fulminate of mercury was used in military percussion caps during the mid-19th century, but it was far from perfect. It is very toxic, and they knew this in the mid-1800s, but the only other percussion chemicals available at the time tended to quickly cause rust.
Mixed with saltpeter, it powered the percussion caps for muskets during the American Civil War and also for most armies of the time in Europe. It was also used in the Maynard tape priming system.
Walter White was apparently able to get his fulminate of mercury to look suspiciously like a piece of sugar rock candy. Its actual appearance is a white or tan powder.
This is a safe and educational representation of a rare artifact and an informational presentation on an important part of history.
