When the three of us were planning the Enough is Enough rally, this poem was emailed to us by an incredible woman who would like to remain anonymous. She wrote this when social media was in the depths of “The man or The bear” debate.

We want to express our deepest gratitude and thank the Victims of Crime Assistance League (VOCAL) for their support during our rally on Sunday the 23/3. We genuinely would have not been able to get the event to go ahead without them and their fantastic support. We particularly want to shout out VOCAL CEO, Sophie Wheeler for her incredible support both to our founder and to our cause!

VOCAL is a local Muloobinba (Newcastle) organisation helping victims of crime access the support services they need during hardship. VOCAL has a Victim Support Unit which offers a free service to victims of crime and the community. “Our trauma-informed professionals pride themselves on tailoring support to suit the personal needs of each client. Men, women and children are welcome to attend office appointments or can work with staff via phone or email” (VOCAL Website).

VOCAL offers emotional support, practical help, and court information & support. When dealing with the aftermath of a crime, VOCAL gives you support to do all of the things you don’t think about after being victimised by crime. Their wealth of knowledge and support are available, free-of-charge.

If you would like to reach out to VOCAL for help, please visit their website, https://www.vocal.org.au/ for further information. Please also follow and support them online via their instagram account.

Unfortunately, VOCAL is facing an uncertain future with government funding cuts leaving them with no guarantees of being able to remain open past mid-2026. This is devastating given that VOCAL do so much important and valued work in our community. We want to be able to give that support back to them!

If you’d like to help keep VOCAL open, here’s how you can help:

❤️like and share their posts to raise awareness of their service
🧡share your lived experience stories (can remain anonymous) via email to [email protected]
💛become an annual member for $15
💚donate via their website (link in bio)
🩵write letters to local, state, and Federal MPs- template in bio

For further information, feel free to message us or reach out to VOCAL!

Thank you VOCAL for all your support during our rally and your continued support 🤍

On a high after meeting with the incredible this afternoon! ❤️
Tim’s support has been beyond appreciated for our rally and beyond. We were honoured to have him attend our rally, so to have his continued support means the world. Tim is such an incredible ally to our LGBTQIASB+ community and to women in Newcastle and this country!
We can’t wait to continue working with him and his amazing team (Lucy included!) to make Newcastle a safe and inclusive space for everyone! Watch this space! 🌈☺️✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

Chelsea’s photos capture the rally and our message so well. It was a solemn & powerful event that left us hungry for change and action. Sharing that space with every individual who attended was so deeply special and it is a day none of us will ever forget.

THANK YOU TO THE INCREDIBLE CHELSEA! What a talent she is! 🤍

Never in our wildest dreams did we think this would get as much media attention that it has and still pinching ourselves that it made the front page of the paper!

ISLA’S SPEECH 🎤‼️

Isla spoke today as an ally to the survivors of violence. She highlighted the gaps in incidents for our First Nations communities and the importance of closing this gap. Isla also spoke to the unfortunate current reality as shown by the statistics, that is not a matter of if she would be assaulted, it is a matter of when. She also spoke to the impact this has on our LGBTQIASB+ community, who often feel the reality of this risk more than many other groups. Homophobia remains rife in our society, even in 2025 and our q***r community feels the impact of having to consider this risk constantly. Even in a comparatively progressive country, our q***r community feel that they must speak and act is a tolerable way in order to protect themselves. We don’t hold our partners hands in certain areas, we take care when using the pronouns of our partners when speaking to strangers, we present ourselves in societally ‘acceptable’ ways, and keep our identities hidden. Our minority groups are vulnerable and need to be protected by our allies, by our communities, and by our legislation 🌈🤍

HAYLEY’S SPEECH 🎤‼️

Our beautiful and brave Hayley spoke today about her personal experience with gender-based violence. Whilst we are devastated that Hayley has had to experience such unacceptable treatment, we are grateful for her willingness to share her experience. We hope this inspires other survivors to speak on their experiences and access support. Hayley highlighted the statistics of the stories we were shared, and the disappointing reality of this behaviour in our community. The support Hayley has shown to Britt exemplifies the significance of believing and fighting for those affected by violence. We are so proud of you, Hayley! 🌈🤍

BRITT’S SPEECH 🎤‼️

Britt has taken what has been a traumatic event and used it as fuel to generate change. Her important research into liquor licensing has shown how the system motivates venues to ‘sweep violence under the rug’. She has pointed out a system that needs to be questioned and changed. This is the work we will continue to do after today’s rally. We are so grateful for the bravery and strength Britt has shown in this process and for sharing her story 🌈🤍

Thankyou NBN Television !

A rally has been held today at Newcastle Foreshore, to raise awareness about an increase in gender-based violence in our region.

The 'Enough Is Enough' rally has been organised by Britt Michell and her Fiancée Hayley Goldie - after Britt was the alleged victim of an assault at Newcastle's The Rogue Scholar, last weekend.

See the full story, tonight.
