Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service - Newcastle Support Group A Group of dedicated volunteers that raise funds and awareness for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service within the Newcastle region.

No one has ever paid to be assisted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. That is because their fellow citizens and the NSW Government through NSW Health and the Ambulance Service of NSW provide the funds that ensure the rescue helicopters are there when and where they are needed. Established in 1975 as a volunteer part time beach patrol in the Newcastle area. Today the Service includes four h

elicopters operating across the Hunter, New England – North West, Central Coast and Mid North Coast regions. The Service undertakes more than 1000 missions each year. It operates 24 hours a day every day of the year. The Helicopter attends missions that it is tasked to by the emergency services of NSW. On board the Rescue Helicopters is a crew of highly trained and skilled paramedics and medical staff, pilots, air and rescue crew members. The Service operates from purpose-built bases in Tamworth and Broadmeadow in Newcastle. Since 1975 the Service has enjoyed a successful partnership with the Westpac Banking Corporation. The Westpac sponsorship is recognised as one of the longest serving corporate partnerships in Australia’s history. Since December 1975, the Service has been owned and operated by the community in partnership with the local Surf Life Saving Branch.

Around 11:30am, on Wednesday 26 August, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance on an urgent inter-hospital transfer from Coffs Harbour Hospital to John Hunter Hospital.

A 2-year-old boy, suffering a serious medical condition, was stabilised by hospital staff and the NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic and the NSW Health doctor from the helicopter’s critical care medical team before being airlifted to Newcastle.

What a result from the Paxton Ride!

This year marked the 20th Paxton Ride and their 8th year fundraising for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

Eight years ago, they started with a goal of around $1,000.
This year, they set themselves a huge target - $100,000.
The ride finished just short of the goal, so the call went out to the Paxton community. People chipped in and helped push them over the line.

And it’s not just the community that makes this event so special. The incredible sponsors who donate, provide auction and raffle prizes and support the ride year after year are a huge part of its success.

And now, after eight years of fundraising, the Paxton Ride has raised an incredible $343,373 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service!

This type of support helps the Service to continue to invest in facilities, training, equipment, people and new technologies, helping to ensure our sustainability, growth and standards of excellence.

A massive thank you to the organisers, riders, volunteers, sponsors and everyone who has supported the Paxton Ride along the way.

Around 2pm, on Friday 7 August, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance on an urgent inter-hospital transfer from Grafton Hospital to Tweed Valley Hospital. A man in his 70s, suffering a serious medical condition, was stabilised by hospital staff and the NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic and the NSW Health doctor from the helicopter’s critical care medical team before being airlifted to Cudgen.

Around 9:15am Tuesday 4 August, a Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to Gunnedah. A man suffering from a serious medical condition was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and the helicopter’s critical care medical team before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital.

Around 10.30am, on Thursday 23 July, a Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to a motor vehicle accident involving a small truck, a 4WD and a car on Nelson Bay Road at Salt Ash. A man in his 20s was trapped for some time before being released by emergency services. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and the helicopter’s critical care medical team for serious leg injuries before being transported by road, accompanied by the medical team, to John Hunter Hospital, in a serious but stable condition.
