Mount Gambier Aviation Museum opening on Sunday 20 September for our South Australia followers.

✈️ Mount Gambier Aviation Museum – Official Opening this Sunday!

We’re excited to celebrate another major milestone for the Mount Gambier Aviation Museum, with our official opening taking place this Sunday, 20 September, at the Mount Gambier Regional Airport.

The formal opening ceremony will commence at 2.00pm, with special guests, speeches and the official ribbon cutting.

This is an exciting next step for the museum and the result of many years of work by our volunteers, supporters and the wider community. We’re looking forward to marking the occasion and celebrating what has been achieved.

Following the official opening, the museum will be open:

✈️ Saturdays – 10.00am to 2.00pm
✈️ Sundays – 10.00am to 2.00pm
✈️ Other days by appointment, subject to volunteer availability.

As we continue to build our volunteer capacity, we plan to expand our opening opportunities even further.

Please note that this Sunday’s event is the formal opening ceremony rather than a general museum open day.

We’d love to see you there this Sunday as we formally mark the opening of the Mount Gambier Aviation Museum.

Some interesting pictures of the Boeing B-29 Washington WW353. The pictures are at Tocumwal and are dated 13 November 1960.

The RAAF received two RAF B-29s for use during nuclear weapons testing in Australia. WW353, which was allocated the serial A76-1 (never applied), did most of the flying while WW354 (A76-2) was held in reserve. Both were scrapped, WW353 was sold in 1956 and scrapped at Tocumwal, NSW, in 1962 though these pictures show they had started scrapping it before then. A third B-29 for the RAAF, WW349, was damaged in the UK and never arrived.

Tocumwal Aviation Museum Aviation Museum is worth a visit if you are interested in the history of Tocumwal aerodrome.

Today we have a collection of mystery instrument panels. They appear to have been put together by Harold or Alan Thomas. The instruments installed may not be correct for each panel they look like they have used whatever instruments they had to fill the panels.
Looking forward to your input.

Two more videos from Rick Hanning of the collection from 1996. The first video shows the collection Beaufighter A8-186, and the second video shows some of the collections cockpits. Again, thanks to Rick for sharing these videos with us.

An interesting video of the collection from 1996, the video was gratefully sent to us from Rick Hanning.

The video shows progress on the Mosquito restoration and a wingless Vengeance, the wings had been removed in the late 1980's to get it out of the hangar for engine runs. The video also includes some footage of Harold Thomas.

If people out there have video footage of the collection in the past copies would be appreciated.
