Give Way to Wildlife 🐾

Our roads are shared spaces, and the native wildlife needs us to slow down and stay alert.

RACQ data from 2024 shows animal collisions on Queensland roads rose by 25%, with over 4,200 insurance claims recorded in a single year.

Locals look out for locals, and that includes the wildlife sharing our streets and bush roads every day.

The riskiest time on the road? Around 38% of animal collisions occur between 5am and 6am and again between 6pm and 7pm, when native wildlife is most active and visibility is at its lowest.

Here is what you can do to help:

🐾 Slow down at dawn and dusk, especially on rural and bush roads
🐾 Use high beams where safe to do so
🐾 Stay alert for movement at the edges of the road
🐾 Do not swerve suddenly as this can cause greater danger to you and other drivers

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, a collision cannot be avoided.
If you find sick, injured or abandoned wildlife, please call our 24/7 ☎️ Hotline on 5527 2444.

Together, we can make Queensland's roads safer for everyone. πŸ’š

You may remember Hyacinth, the beautiful koala from Coombabah whose story touched the hearts of many in our community.

Bringing Hyacinth into care was truly a team effort. From the concerned local resident who first reported her condition, to the volunteers who patiently monitored and coordinated her rescue, along with the dedicated staff and volunteers at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital who cared for her throughout her recovery β€” every step of her journey was made possible by people who care deeply about our wildlife.

Over the past few weeks, Hyacinth has been receiving expert treatment and compassionate care at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. Thanks to their efforts, she has made a wonderful recovery.

This week, our volunteers had the privilege of returning Hyacinth home. In a moment that made every challenge worthwhile, she was released back to the very same tree she was rescued from. After confidently climbing high into the canopy, she quickly settled in and began feeding β€” right where she belongs.

Wildlife rescue can be heartbreaking at times, and not every story has a happy ending. But moments like these remind us why our volunteers give so generously of their time, energy and compassion. Seeing an animal recover, return to the wild, and continue living the life nature intended is one of the greatest rewards of all.

Welcome home, Hyacinth. πŸ’šπŸ¨

A huge thank you to Somerset College! πŸ’šπŸΎ

Recently, our volunteers Greg and Didi had the privilege of presenting to 100 Year 3 students as part of the National Simultaneous Storytime event.

They shared stories of rescues, animals currently in our care, and spoke about how students and their families can make a difference for native wildlife in their everyday lives.

The response from the school community was incredible. Somerset College raised $930 for Wildcare through a gold coin donation free dress day. That kind of generosity from such young wildlife advocates means the world to us and will go directly towards caring for the native wildlife in our region.

Thank you to the staff, students, and families of Somerset College.

You are making a real difference. πŸ™ŒπŸ¦˜

Winter is here, and if you have a fireplace at home, this is your reminder to check it before you light up! πŸ”₯🏠

Every year our rescue team responds to calls involving wildlife found inside chimneys and flues. 🐾 Possums, birds and other small animals seek out warm, enclosed spaces as the temperature drops, and a chimney can look like the perfect hideout until someone lights a fire below. πŸ˜”

The good news? It is so easy to prevent! πŸ’š

Before your first fire of the season, here is what to do:

πŸ”¦ Grab a torch and check inside your chimney and flue for any signs of an uninvited guest
πŸ›‘οΈ Fit a protective mesh or screen over the opening as a long-term solution
🏑 Put up a possum box in a nearby tree to give them a safe, warm alternative to your home

This little one was lucky. Found safe and uninjured thanks to a homeowner who checked first, and the chimney is now screened and wildlife-proofed for good! πŸ™ŒπŸ¨

If you find injured wildlife, please call our 24/7 ☎️ Hotline on 5527 2444.
Together we can make sure everyone stays warm this winter! πŸŒΏπŸΎπŸ’š

🌸 Native food for wildlife

As wildlife carers, people in the community often ask us what they can do to help our wildlife.

The answer is:

Planting as many native bushes, plants and trees that you can!

Planting native species on your property as opposed to exotic plant species, provides a vast range of food sources for wildlife.

Native foliage, native blossoms and native berries all provide integral food sources for numerous species of birds and marsupials.

Not to mention supporting our very important pollinators of flying foxes and bees, down to the tiniest insects doing important work in our ecosystem.

We’d love to share something truly special with our Gold Coast community πŸ¨πŸ’š

Behind every koala that gets a second chance is a team of passionate people working tirelessly to understand, treat, and protect them in the wild. The CWH Koala Research Team are part of that quiet force for good - dedicating countless hours to researching disease, improving treatments, and giving koalas the best possible chance at survival.

Their work goes far beyond what we often see. From investigating the impacts of chlamydia and other threats, to contributing to life-changing conservation outcomes, they are helping shape a future where koalas can continue to thrive in the wild.

It’s work that takes patience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to our wildlife - and it truly makes a difference.

If you care about the future of koalas as much as we do, we warmly encourage you to follow their page and support the incredible work they’re doing πŸ‘‡

Every degree matters. 🌍

Today is World Environment Day, and this year the spotlight is on climate change, an issue our wildlife is feeling every single day.

Longer droughts. More intense storms. Heatwaves that push native animals to their limits. Floods that destroy the habitats our local wildlife depend on. The flow-on effects for native wildlife is real, and they are happening right now. 🐾

Our rescue volunteers respond year-round to wildlife in crisis, and the changing climate is making their work harder and more urgent than ever. Stressed wildlife are more vulnerable to injury, disease, and displacement. When their environment changes faster than they can adapt, they need us to step in. πŸ’š

So today, on World Environment Day, here is what you can do:

🌿 Plant native species in your garden to provide food and shelter
πŸ’§ Leave out fresh water for local wildlife, especially on hot days
πŸš— Drive carefully at dawn and dusk when wildlife are on the move
πŸ“± Save our number so you are ready if you ever find wildlife in need
🌱 Support local conservation groups making a difference on the ground.

Every small action adds up. Together, we can protect the incredible wildlife that makes South East Queensland so special. 🦘🐨

Hyacinth’s Story πŸ’›

Several weeks ago, a caring Coombabah resident alerted us to a koala showing clear signs of cystitis, often linked to a chlamydial infection. It was heartbreaking β€” volunteers could hear her crying out in pain when she tried to urinate.

Our team began closely monitoring her, hoping she might descend to a lower tree where she could be safely rescued. But Hyacinth had other ideas, choosing to remain high in the gum trees, well outside of reach. A trap was carefully set, and for two days and nights, our volunteers took shifts around the clock, patiently watching and waiting. Despite their dedication, she refused to come down.

When a small window of favourable weather arrived, something truly special happened. The incredible team Koala Rescue Redlands & Surrounds INC stepped in to help β€” generously giving their time, skill, and care. Tree climbing for koala rescues is no small feat; it requires experience, precision, and courage.

Together, through calm coordination and unwavering commitment, both teams worked as one to safely bring Hyacinth down.

This rescue is a beautiful reminder of what makes the wildlife community so special. We are all volunteers, united by compassion, always ready to support one another β€” because the wellbeing of our koalas comes first.

Hyacinth is now in the dedicated care of the team at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, where we’re hopeful she’ll make a full recovery.

To every single person who played a part β€” from the first call, to the long hours of monitoring, to the skilled rescue β€” thank you. Your kindness, patience, and teamwork made all the difference.
