Pilot complete: 1,000 Vetiver slips in the ground at Banyula— protecting a dam wall and supporting wetland regeneration next to the macadamia plantation.

Big thanks to Wellco Contracting and Josh Wellman for opening the door. It's given us the chance to show what the Vetiver System can actually do across two very different jobs on the same site — holding structure on water infrastructure (the dam wall) and priming the ground for wetland regeneration — in the one collaboration.

That's the real story here: Vetiver isn't a one-trick planting. It's a multi-skilled tool for land regeneration and water infrastructure protection, and Banyula is exactly the kind of ambitious, forward-thinking property where that gets to be proven out properly.

In 2013, I stood on a stage in Medellín, Colombia, making the case for Vetiver grass as a serious solution to erosion, leachate, and slope failure. The room nodded. A decade later, most of those same institutions are still doing things the old way.

Meanwhile, Stotts Creek landfill here in Australia has been running a large-scale Vetiver system successfully for 23 years — and it's still the only one doing it at that scale.

Twenty-three years of proof, and it hasn't spread. That's been bugging me for a while, and I don't think it's about the plant. I think it's about how we've been talking about it.

I wrote up what I think is actually going on — why solutions that work brilliantly on paper still can't get a seat at the table, and what needs to change about how they're presented to the people who'd actually use them.

Would love to hear what others think, especially anyone who's run into the same wall trying to get a good idea taken seriously.
