🌿 *Summary of today’s Jumu’ah: The Sanctity of Life and Abortion in Islam*🌿
🔹 One of the primary objectives of Islamic law is the preservation of human life.
📖 The Qur’an teaches that human life develops through stages in the womb, all under the care and decree of Allah (23:14)
⚖️ In discussing abortion, scholars consider:
• The nature of the fetus
• The stages of fetal development
• When the fetus is regarded as a human life deserving full protection
🤲 Classical scholars generally held that ensoulment occurs at approximately 120 days based on authentic hadith.
🚫 After ensoulment, abortion is unanimously prohibited except in exceptional circumstances, such as a serious threat to the mother’s life.
⚕️ Islam values both the life of the unborn child and the life of the mother and approaches these issues with wisdom, justice, and mercy.
📚 Scholars differed regarding abortion before ensoulment:
• Some permitted it under limited conditions.
• Some considered it disliked.
• Others prohibited it from conception.
🩺 Based on another ahadith which mentions 42 nights (Approx 5/6 weeks) in which ensoulmet occurs as well as modern medical advancement shows that fetal development begins very early, leading many contemporary scholars to call for greater caution even before 120 days.
💡 Difficult cases involving:
• Serious health complications or danger to mothers life
• Severe fetal abnormalities
Should be discussed with qualified scholars and trustworthy medical professionals, in such exceptional circumstances abortion may be permissible.
🌱 Islam is a religion of mercy and respect for life. Every life is a trust from Allah.
📖 Allah says:
“Do not kill the soul which Allah has made sacred except with right.” (17:33)
🛡️ Islam also seeks to prevent situations that may lead to abortion by:
• Promoting chastity and modesty
• Facilitating marriage
• Strengthening families
• Supporting mothers
• Educating about the sanctity of life
📖 Allah says:
“Do not even approach zina. Indeed, it is an obscenity and an evil path.” (17:32)
💰 Allah also reminds us:
“Do not kill your children for fear of poverty; We provide for them and for you.” (17:31)
✨ Key Takeaway:
The goal is not simply to say, “Abortion is prohibited.”
Rather, Islam seeks to build a community where:
🤝 Marriage is facilitated
🛡️ Chastity is honoured
👨👩👧👦 Families are strong
🤱 Mothers are supported
👶 Children are valued
❤️ Those in hardship find mercy, guidance, and support
🌟 By strengthening these foundations, many situations that lead people to consider abortion can be prevented before they arise.
🤲 May Allah protect our families, guide our youth, and grant us wisdom, compassion, and steadfastne
Ameen.
