You have choices when it comes to your Cervical Screening Test:

🟡 Do the test yourself using a small self-swab.
🟡 Have a healthcare worker take a sample using a speculum to access your cervix. They can also assist with the self-swab if needed.

Have a yarn with a doctor, nurse, or Aboriginal Health Practitioner you feel comfortable with about cervical screening and which option is best for you.

Women and people with a cervix aged between 25 and 74 should have a Cervical Screening Test every five years.

MLHD's Women's Health Service provides free cervical screening in clinics across the district - to find the nearest clinic and book an appointment call the Community Care Intake Service on 1800 654 324.

Meet Catherine, a Senior Renal Social Worker with MLHD.

Catherine is based in Wagga Wagga and covers the eastern half of our District, providing clinical social work support to chronic kidney disease and dialysis clients.

This involves completing psychosocial assessments to identify areas of need for our clients and determining what clinical intervention may be required to offer this support.

As a senior clinician, Catherine also participates in quality improvement projects, community education activities and provides support to the other social workers across the district.

“I love the variety that my job provides. No two days look the same, so there is no chance of boredom. I get to see patients in hospital, in the sub-acute dialysis ward setting and in the community with home visits,” Catherine said.

“I also love working as part of a multidisciplinary team; I work closely with our allied health and nursing outreach team, and this is a great team to work alongside.”

Living with a chronic health condition can have a significant effect on someone’s quality of life and Catherine said it is rewarding to see the tangible difference that psychosocial support can provide to her clients and their quality of life.

“My goals with this job are to help clients become more empowered and autonomous, therefore reducing their need for social work input; this would mean I’ve done my job well,” she said.

“Another goal is to continue to work with the district wide renal team to increase community knowledge and awareness of kidney disease and the importance of looking after your kidneys.”

The social work team within the Wagga Renal Unit is growing and is ready to welcome someone new!

How is Your Pair?

April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month. That means it’s time for men to get to know their nuts; knowing what feels normal for them, and what doesn’t.
Give the men in your life the nudge to get started. So if there are any unusual changes over time, like a lump, swelling, or pain, they’ll notice. If changes do happen, make sure they book a doctor’s appointment!

Members from our Narrandera LHAC met recently to discuss our activities and project plans for the future.

It was great to catch up and chat about priority areas, and what sort of activities we can do to help improve health for our community in Narrandera.

We also had a lot of discussion around how we can partner with our health services to keep everyone informed about what services are actually available here for us.

Huge shout out and thank you to the Execs from Murrumbidgee Local Health District and the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network for coming along and helping us with our planning sessions - we had lots of great ideas!

If you'd like to contribute - or have some ideas around health services for Narrandera - please reach out to our LHAC members, message us, or post below. We'd love to hear from you!
