Liddell WORKS Creative Program

Liddell WORKS Creative Program Creative program marking the closure of Liddell Power Station with artist residencies and events.

From the shutdown of Liddell Power Station, LiddellWORKS has emerged - a creative program that seeks to honour the legacy of the Liddell Power Station and capture its transformation. Local talented artists were handpicked to document, record, and creatively interpret the power station's journey, from its operational years to the poignant moment of its closure and beyond. LiddellWORKS invites you,

the community to join us on this journey by following along here

LiddellWORKS is a joint project between Arts Upper Hunter, AGL Macquarie, Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre and the Singleton Arts and Cultural Centre to mark the historic closure of the Liddell Power Station which occurred in April 2023. Also funded by the Department of Regional NSW, the Stronger Country Communities Fund, this project is well underway, with community events, workshops, and exhibitions to come.

On an evening threatening showers, nearly 40 people gathered on the Muswellbrook Library forecourt for the unveiling of a new sculpted bench seat, Liddell, a legacy of light and dark, by artist blacksmith Will Maguire. The circular bench is designed as a place of contemplation – it is also a representation of the power station itself. Much of it is built out of reworked pieces from Liddell. You can follow the process of electricity creation through the little sculpture in the middle. And the base lights up!

Will Maguire created this work to mark the closure of iconic Liddell Power Station in 2023 and it was unveiled on 28 April, two years to the day since the last turbine slowed and stopped. Making the bench raised questions about what this power station meant for Australia and what it means into the future. The prominent stacks and circular light nod toward both the public good of providing electricity to NSW, and the public harm of carbon emissions contributing to a warming planet.

Will has said of his work: “This seat is built from the industrial bones of hard work and high pressures and now sits in a public place providing restorative rump support for all, with ample room for your neighbour.”

Overall, Maguire wanted to act towards a positive future. A three dimensional “map” made with remnants of the industrial complex itself, it speaks to lives and active processes which hummed for decades. Sections of pressure pipe stand in for the four huge boilers, a re-forged crusher-drive forms the coal conveyer tower. Deep texture from ‘King Dick’ spanners and ash-conveyor parts fill out the picture of a place that few knew well but which affected many lives. Above all this is a practical seat where people can sit together night or day.

The artwork was commissioned by Arts Upper Hunter for the LiddellWORKS program, funding from AGL, the NSW Government and Muswellbrook Shire Council.

You are invited to the unveiling of an illuminated bench seat to mark the closure of the iconic Liddell Power Station.

Monday 28 April, 5pm.
Outside the Muswellbrook Library, 126 Bridge St, Muswellbrook.

The remarkable work has been created by artist-blacksmith Will Maguire – much of it “smithed” from pieces collected from the Liddell site. Its intriguing design includes two smokestacks like the power station itself, and a journey from coal to generator to wires.

The work was commissioned as a piece of public art by Arts Upper Hunter. “It’s an unusual and significant artwork,” according to AUH director John O’Brien, “exploring the journey of electricity – it even lights up!”

The bench will be unveiled on the second anniversary of the shutdown of Liddell’s last generator in 2023.

For Maguire the challenge was to create something that offered positivity without glossing over difficult questions we all must ask ourselves.

‘This seat is built from the industrial bones of high pressures and hard work. It sits next to the highway providing restorative rump support for all, with ample room for your neighbour. Liddell’s history is one of both public good providing electricity to NSW, alongside public harm with its extensive warming emissions on a disrupted planet. This forms an ongoing tension we all must deal with. A publicly available circular bench made with pressure pipes, old nuts and ‘King Dick’ spanners ripe for a chat.’

The bench seat is one of the last elements in the LiddellWORKS creative program marking the closure. A partnership between AGL, Arts Upper Hunter, Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre and Singleton Arts + Cultural Centre, this huge multi-artform program honoured the legacy of the workers but still spoke to the future. Public programs gave workers and the public the chance to create and make work themselves. There was even a nationally broadcast debate on the future of the valley.

“The power station’s time had passed but it really did deserve to be memorialised,” according to O’Brien.

LiddellWORKS, including the bench seat, was funded by the Department of Regional NSW’s Stronger Country Communities Fund and supported by AGL. Muswellbrook Shire Council have contributed time, engineering and staff to getting the seat in place.

The board and staff of Arts Upper Hunter recently farewelled Marina Lee Warner, one of our talented Project Officers. Marina has wrapped up her LiddellWORKS work. She also put together the Life Drawing theatre tour, Diwali In The Gallery and other happenings, and showered us in wit and energy throughout her time. Many thanks!

Hard to believe it had been 12 months ago since Arts Upper Hunter’s inaugural event Create By The Lake held out at Lake Liddell. Here are some pics.

Create by the Lake was an opportunity for the local community to meet some of the LiddellWORKS Creative Program artists.

Will Maguire ran 3 blacksmithing workshops, Lisa Wiseman ran 3 crochet workshops, ceramic artist Kara Wood created a Liddell landscape on two old doors, and cartoonist Peter Lewis ran 3 workshops.

Participants experienced the amazing 3D Virtual Reality tour of the Liddell Power Station through headsets and goggles, the brainchild of Newcastle creative, Tim Black.

Waagan Galga Dance group performed a Smoking Ceremony, Welcome To Country and Creation Dance. Musicians from the Upper Hunter Conservatorium entertained the crowd, and stunt clown, magician and entertainer extraordinaire The Amazing Jono amused everyone throughout the day.

Creative By The Lake was part of the LiddellWORKS program was conceived by Arts Upper Hunter and developed in partnership with AGL, Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre, and Singleton Arts and Cultural Centre, with funding from the Department of Regional NSW and AGL.
