Helena River Catchment Group The Helena River Catchment Group (HRCG) was founded in 1997 for biodiversity and conservation.

The Helena River Catchment Group (HRCG) was founded in 1997 with the aims of promoting and facilitating biodiversity conservation and works predominantly within the Lower Helena River Catchment. The HRCG works by lobbying, contributing to committees and working groups, acting as a liaison point for ‘friends’ groups, developing partnerships with other organisations and directly undertaking on-ground work. The HRCG has a core of dedicated committee members, backed up by a large number of associates who are called on for advice or labour when needed.

A little wind and rain couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm at yesterday’s Trillion Trees Open Day! 🌱

A good crowd gathered in Hazelmere on 19 September to celebrate the opening of the new buildings, with Connie and Ducky finding time for a serious discussion.

It was a privilege to share our shelter with Blackadder Woodbridge, whose amazing handmade maps attracted plenty of attention and conversation. We also connected over demonstrations and hands-on practice with tools from our landcare trailer—Pottiputki planting tools, augers and spades all had their moment!

The gusty conditions kept the drone grounded, so no aerial footage this time. We’ll keep trying! 💚

It’s always fantastic to see people we’ve worked alongside over many years going from strength to strength.

Francesca Flynn and Callum Haines are both long-term members of the Helena River Catchment Group and have worked alongside the group on a number of environmental projects and initiatives over the years.

Francesca is an environmental scientist, the Executive Director of Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association Incorporated, and the owner of Evergreen Consultancy. She is also the Coordinator of Friends of Glen Forrest Superblock. Through these roles, Francesca continues to make an important contribution to environmental conservation, caring for Country and strengthening community involvement in protecting our natural environment.

It has been wonderful to watch Francesca’s knowledge, experience and passion develop over the years, and we’re incredibly proud that the Helena River Catchment Group has been part of that journey.

Callum has also made a significant contribution to the Helena River Catchment Group over many years, including serving as our Treasurer. His commitment, knowledge and willingness to get involved have been greatly valued by the group, and we’re proud of the work we have accomplished together.

We look forward to continuing to work alongside our two outstanding Helena River Catchment Group members on future projects and seeing what they achieve in the years ahead.

🪲 Getting the Dirt on Dung Beetles! 🌱

We’re very lucky to have Chittering Landcare Centre looking after us and supporting the work we do — so when they have something happening, we want to look after them too!

Chittering Landcare Centre are hosting an interesting morning exploring the fascinating world of dung beetles — those tiny creatures that play a surprisingly BIG role in healthy soils, nutrient cycling and productive landscapes.

Kath Dawson will be presenting the findings from dung beetle research conducted over the past year, including the species and abundance found across the study area. There’ll also be a paddock walk, so bring your hat and sturdy boots!

🌿 Congratulations Kate! 🌿

A wonderful achievement for our good friend and colleague from Trillion Trees Australia, Kate Herren, whose beautiful photo “Eucalypt Cubby” received a Judge’s Commendation in the Eucalypt Australia “My Eucalypt Home” photography competition. 👏📸

It’s fantastic to see Kate’s love of our Australian bush and the next generation of environmental custodians recognised in such a special way.

Those of us at HRCG who know Kate also know just how passionate she is about our environment and the important work being done across the Perth Hills. 🌱💚

Community gardens are about so much more than growing food!

It’s fantastic to see the Darlington Community Garden WA volunteers getting spring veggies, herbs and flowers into the ground. 🌿🥬🌸

Projects like this are a great reminder of how local community spaces can bring people together while creating valuable habitat for pollinators and other wildlife. 🐝🦋

Well done to Kylie, Sandeep, Sue and Kate — and we’re looking forward to hearing more about the Darlington Open Gardens event on Sunday 11 October!

🌱 What an amazing planting day! 🌱

Yesterday, HRCG volunteers gathered at the Helena River Picnic Grounds Project site for our latest planting day — and what an effort it was!

Together, our dedicated group of volunteers managed to get more than 1,200 plants into the ground!

And we couldn’t have asked for better conditions. ☀️ After some very wet and cold planting days, it was fantastic to enjoy beautiful sunny weather and a great morning out in the bush.

A huge thank you to Philip Lane for organising a fantastic morning tea, along with all the goodies brought along by our wonderful volunteers. ☕🍰🥪 There was certainly no shortage of food!

And, of course, the morning didn’t finish when the planting stopped! We headed back to a member’s house for a great BBQ, some well-earned food and plenty of laughs.

It was a fantastic day all round — 1,200+ plants in the ground, great weather, great food and, most importantly, a great group of people coming together for the Helena River.

A massive thank you to everyone who came along and put in the hard work. Your dedication and enthusiasm make these projects possible. 👏

🌱 Great to see the next generation getting involved! 🐦

We love seeing young people getting hands-on with our local environment. The Year 6 students at Helena College have shown fantastic initiative by forming their own Cockatoo Club and planting more than 55 Hakea plants to provide an important food source for Carnaby’s Cockatoos into the future.

For us at HRCG, this is exactly the sort of involvement we love to see — giving young people the opportunity to get their hands dirty, learn about our unique environment and play a real part in protecting it. 🌿💚

The work we do today helps create a healthier environment for tomorrow, and inspiring the next generation to care for our bushland and wildlife is a big part of that.

Well done Sophie, Isla and the entire Cockatoo Club! 👏🌱🐦

🌱🌧️ Another Great Day of Planting at the Iconic Project! 🌿

On Saturday, HRCG members headed out to our Iconic Project site in Helena Valley, where we planted more than 100 sedges along the riverbank. 🌱💧

It was a very cold and wet day, but the conditions were actually ideal for getting plants into the ground! 🌧️ — and there was certainly no shortage of water for the newly planted sedges.

A big thank you once again to Philip Lane, HRCG Chairperson, for leading the day and making sure the plants got into the ground, despite the very wet and chilly conditions. 👏🌿

Every plant we put in the ground is another step towards restoring and improving the Helena River environment.

💚 Happy Landcare Week! 🌿

This week we're celebrating the incredible volunteers, community groups and local champions who dedicate their time to protecting and restoring our natural environment.

Here at Helena River Catchment Group, we're proud to work alongside passionate volunteers who spend countless hours planting native seedlings, controlling weeds, improving habitat and caring for the Helena River catchment. Every hour volunteered helps create healthier waterways, supports biodiversity and leaves a lasting legacy for future generations.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has volunteered with us over the years. Whether you've joined us for a planting day, tackled invasive weeds, donated containers through Containers for Change, or supported us in other ways, you've made a real difference. 💚

🌿 Please consider having your say for WA's Black Cockatoos. 🖤🦜

Our friends at Save the Black Cockatoos are encouraging the community to make a submission regarding the proposed Katanning gold mine, which they say could impact important habitat for the endangered Carnaby's Black Cockatoo (Ngolyenok).

As a group dedicated to protecting and restoring the Helena River catchment, we know how vital native vegetation, mature trees, wildlife corridors and healthy ecosystems are for the survival of our unique wildlife.
