Great news at last: In the 26-year-fight to protect Springbrook National Park from a commercial cableway the Respect Springbrook Mountain coalition has been successful in advocating to halt the spending of ratepayer’s funds by Council on this destructive proposal.

Thank you to the eleven Councillors who voted for this outcome and especially to Councillor Glenn Tozer who put forward the motion.

City of Gold Coast have voted to not to proceed with any further investigations into a Cableway to Springbrook. Thank you to the hard work of Councillor Tozer for getting the motion carried.

The outcome of yesterdays council meeting. Yes, Springbrook will be further investigated as the preferred destination for a cableway. Their push polling showed lots of people had no knowledge of a cableway proposal but 58% supported it. Supported it with nil knowledge of the implications. So a further $990,000 of your rate payers money will be used to help out private proponents because council is presently doing all the work. Supposedly council officers will come back with an actual route to investigate more fully sometime this year. They are presently looking at 10 options! So will it be up the Purlingbrook Valley to somewhere around the falls? Will it come up the Cream track so that the 600,000 customers have to be bused around the mountain to see waterfalls. Or will it come up from Numinbah Valley? All proposals have the same dreadful social and environmental implications.

The Respect Springbrook Mountain Coalition includes a number of conservation and community groups which have serious concerns about the negative impacts of a proposed cableway to or adjacent to Springbrook National Park.

Unfortunately the Cableway proposal marches slowly on. No new money was allocated for further studies. Yes, the council entity pushing this destructive proposal are talking to proponents. Proponents who want Council to use rate payers money to do all the preliminary studies. Studies that could cost up to $11 million. Below is the resolution passed at a full council meeting n the 2nd of December.

Cableway: Join us tomorrow morning at 9am at GCCC Chambers, Bundall. Consultants say it is an “expensive task” and the only way to de-risk the project will be to secure full environmental approvals under the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act and await a government review.
“If it is a full EPBC submission and community engagement and all other aspects to reduce risk, it would be far more than $1m and probably $3m to $4m to engage a private planning firm,” a leading consultant said.
