Best outcome possible! At yesterday's unscheduled council meeting, councillors unanimously voted for the most humane option to address the welfare concerns of the condition of the wallaby population in the wildlife sanctuary at The Briars.

While we are relieved by this decision and we sincerely thank all councillors for selecting the option that prioritises wildlife welfare, there are many questions that will need to be answered; primarily about how we got to this critical point.

It appears that yesterday's meeting has provided a strong foundation for ongoing dialogue with the council about wildlife not just at The Briars but across the Peninsula.

It was particularly heartwarming to hear our local wildlife carers praised for their dedication and selfless volunteering 24/7 while they also witness horrible scenes and cruelty - thanks Cr Max Patton for acknowledging them. Shelters and carers across the country are overwhelmed and burnt out.

Amendments to the motion from both Cr Patton and Cr Gill highlighted the need for an overall wildlife management plan and for engagement with our fantastic local groups and individuals who have so much experience in this field.

A big thank you to our MP Shire CEO too.

Around 120 wallabies will be relocated from The Briars wildlife sanctuary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the population, after a unanimous vote of councillors tonight (16/9). Last year, an increase in the availability of food for the wallabies, brought about by increased rainfall, stimula...

PLEASE SEND QUICK EMAIL TO COUNCILLORS RE TONIGHT'S MEETING:

Sorry this is late, but it would be great if you could send a quick email to our councillors about tonight's unscheduled meeting regarding the overpopulation and subsequent starvation of wallabies in the sanctuary.

Simply ask them to choose the kind and humane approach which appears to be the University of Melbourne advice. It is also the officers' recommendation. It's difficult for us to say much more on this topic as the reports are confidential.

I think we can safely say that the problem has been caused by lack of management of the sanctuary for whatever reason. Due to an absence of public information, no blame is being apportioned.

You might also like to mention that we now expect that there will be a solid management plan in place that avoids this terrible situation in the future.

Following on from the recent announcement that there is an unscheduled council meeting tomorrow night re wildlife welfare concerns, this article helps clarify things a bit.

A booming wallaby population at The Briars nature sanctuary will see Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors hold an urgent meeting about how to best manage their future. Mayor Cr Anthony Marsh called for an unscheduled online public meeting for 16 September to “urgently address animal welfare conc...

The Mornington Peninsula Permaculture Network is taking a meander through the Briars Sanctuary Sunday August 3rd from 10am. If anyone with knowledge of the flora or fauna around the 4km track would like to join and share your experience and insights, the Permies would really enjoy connecting. The Permie Network has a couple of people with general knowledge in the group but would really appreciate someone more local and who really feels connected to the Sanctuary who can offer a deeper and personal perspective.
Cheers
