Best outcome possible! At yesterday's unscheduled council meeting, councillors unanimously voted for the most humane option to address the welfare concerns of the condition of the wallaby population in the wildlife sanctuary at The Briars.
While we are relieved by this decision and we sincerely thank all councillors for selecting the option that prioritises wildlife welfare, there are many questions that will need to be answered; primarily about how we got to this critical point.
It appears that yesterday's meeting has provided a strong foundation for ongoing dialogue with the council about wildlife not just at The Briars but across the Peninsula.
It was particularly heartwarming to hear our local wildlife carers praised for their dedication and selfless volunteering 24/7 while they also witness horrible scenes and cruelty - thanks Cr Max Patton for acknowledging them. Shelters and carers across the country are overwhelmed and burnt out.
Amendments to the motion from both Cr Patton and Cr Gill highlighted the need for an overall wildlife management plan and for engagement with our fantastic local groups and individuals who have so much experience in this field.
