Today, the 11th of October, marks 25 years since the beginning of Australian service in Afghanistan.

A national commemorative service being held at the Australian War Memorial will be broadcast this morning on ABC TV and ABC iview. Check your local guides for broadcast times.

Between 2001 and 2021, more than 35,000 Australian Defence Force personnel served in Afghanistan and the wider Middle East Area of Operations.

We honour those who served, remember those who lost their lives, and acknowledge the families and loved ones who shared the sacrifices of service.

For some, today will bring pride and memories of mateship. For others, grief, difficult memories or mixed emotions. There is no single way to feel.

To our Afghanistan veterans and their families, your service matters, your experiences matter, and you belong in our RSL community.

The Mount Beauty RSL Sub-Branch extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends and fellow ADF members of the Australian Army soldier who tragically lost their life during a training exercise at Mount Bundey.

Our thoughts are also with the five soldiers who were injured, and with their families and mates as they recover.

News such as this is felt deeply across the wider veteran and Defence community.

We are deeply saddened by the death of an Australian Army soldier during a training exercise at Mount Bundey, south-east of Darwin. Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family, friends and fellow ADF members during this difficult time.

An additional five Australian soldiers were injured, and we extend our thoughts and best wishes to them and their families as they recover.

Thanks to the wonderful support of Albury Legacy, one of our newest and youngest Mount Beauty RSL Sub-Branch members, Kayden, has set sail aboard the Young Endeavour for what promises to be an incredible adventure. ⛵️🇦🇺

Kayden joined the Youth Crew in Brisbane yesterday for Voyage 15/26, which will see them make their way south along the Australian coast toward Sydney.

Day one has already seen the crew settle aboard, complete safety training, get to know their watches and sail down the Brisbane River before anchoring off Tangalooma for the night. Next up — their first foremast climbs!

Opportunities like this are about so much more than sailing. They offer young people the chance to challenge themselves, build confidence, develop teamwork and leadership skills, form new friendships and discover just how much they’re capable of.

A huge thank you to Albury Legacy for helping make this experience possible for Kayden. Your ongoing support of veterans and their families creates opportunities that can have a lasting impact on the next generation.

We’ll be following along with the Captain’s Logs over the coming days and can’t wait to hear all about the adventure when Kayden returns.

Spring has sprung here in the valley 🌸🌿 The birds are singing, the flowers are out, and it’s a beautiful time of year to catch up over a coffee.

🕊️ National Peacekeepers’ Day | 14 September

Today we recognise and honour the Australians who have served in peacekeeping and peace operations around the world.

National Peacekeepers’ Day marks the anniversary of Australia’s first involvement in peace operations. On 14 September 1947, four Australian military observers became the world’s first peacekeepers deployed into the field, serving in the Netherlands East Indies, now Indonesia.

Since then, more than 65,000 Australians have served in peace operations across more than 60 countries, including members of the Australian Defence Force, Australian police and civilians. Tragically, 17 Australians have lost their lives while serving on these operations.

Peacekeepers have served in challenging and often dangerous environments, helping protect communities, deliver humanitarian assistance, observe ceasefires, provide medical care and support stability in areas affected by conflict.

Today, the Mount Beauty RSL Sub-Branch acknowledges their service, professionalism, compassion and sacrifice, along with the families who have supported them.

To all who have served in the pursuit of peace, we thank you.
