🚑 Building Life-Saving Skills in Timor-Leste 🇹🇱

The Basic Emergency Life Support Training Program continues to make a real difference! Recently, a one-day course was delivered to 20 healthcare workers at the Uailili Health Centre in the Baucau region.

Led by SABEH, with ongoing support from St John Ambulance Tasmania, this training equips frontline staff with the skills to respond quickly and effectively in life-threatening emergencies—when every minute counts. 💚

Together, we’re strengthening healthcare capacity and saving lives.

As the project lead I am now finally back in Tassie ( or flying over it). The last few weeks have been an amazing challenge that has resulted in increased knowledge and capability in repards emergency care knolwdge and care provision in Timor-Leste.

The next challenge is analysing the learnings from the course evaluations and strategic plans, completing reports, and seeking support for the next phases of the projects.

The next mission will see further local delivery of the Basic Emergency Life Support Courses, exploring the enhancing of the provision of first aid training and supplies.

The project showed an over whelming need for a virtual first training option. To support the widespread, timely, and accessible provision of aid training to schools and the vocational education sector in Timor-Leste. While also engagimg local partners to enable the ongoing sustainability of the project and its outcomes.

This mission has not just been about training and capacity building, it has also been about empowering the health workforce to make changes to improve practices and the quality of care provided.

To achieve this mentoring has been provided on configuring the health service facilities to improve the safety and quality of patient care.

It also included assisting with the assessing of broken and no longer serviceable equipment and removing it from the site. This activity resulted in two truck loads of broken equipment being removed from the health centre site with the help of staff and a local contractor. This activity greatly improves the safety of the environment around the facility and encourages staff action to make improvement.

Today Annie Mankin and the kids caught up with Corey Mannequin where he works at the National Ambulance HQ. Annie and kids joined in providing basic life support train with 23 staff from SNAEMS.

The BLS training concluded with a quick introduction on sports injuries management in preparation to the staff’s involvement with the Portuguese games being hosted in a couple of weeks.

But the day was not complete without our Junior Manikin checking out the ambulances and the work of the mechanics, whist hanging out with old friend Lucas who was visiting Dili from Atauro Island.

Off to do training with the National Ambulance service today with the Manikin Family. These will be very helpful.
