Association of Ukrainians in Tasmania Welcome to the page of the Association of Ukrainians in Tasmania. Have a browse, leave a message, come to an event - let us share our culture with you!

The Association of Ukrainians in Tasmania began when the first immigrants arrived in the post World War Two era. The community grew in number and strength and before long, built community houses in Moonah (south) and St. Leonards (north).. There were many activities during the 1950's and 60's including Ukrainian School, dance troupes, PLAST (scouts) and regular church services. During the 1970's

these activities decreased in number, and the community began to disperse. Despite these challenges, regular events such as Malanka (New Year) have always been held, and a new Hall has been built in Hobart. Since that time, a small, but passionate group of active Ukrainians has been making an effort to revive the now second and third generation's interest in Ukrainian language and culture. We welcome new members from Ukraine and interested members of the public to take part in our activities! We hope that the community will continue to grow in number and strength in coming years to keep our traditions alive. Thanks for your support! PAGE RULES:

🛑 russia is killing people every day. Sport should not be used to cover for it.

World Aquatics has lifted its ban on russian and belarusian national teams. As a result, the russian women's water polo national team will compete under the russian flag, anthem and symbols at the 2026 Water Polo World Cup Finals at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, 22–26 July, hosted by Water Polo Australia.

🚨 This is sportswashing. Allowing russian national teams back into international competition normalises aggression, undermines international sanctions, and hands a propaganda gift to a regime responsible for illegal invasion, war crimes and systematic violations of international law.

⚠️russian athletes are deeply embedded in the state apparatus. Many compete through clubs and structures tied to the russian military, security services, or state-owned enterprises that support and sustain the war effort.

Meanwhile, russia continues to bomb Ukrainian cities and kill civilians every day 💔. More than 650 Ukrainian athletes and coaches have been killed since the full-scale invasion began. 800 sporting facilities have been destroyed. Ukrainian athletes continue to train under air raid sirens, amidst destruction, displacement and profound national trauma.

🇳🇴🇫🇮🇵🇱 Aquatic associations in Norway, Finland, and Poland have already refused to host World Aquatics events in protest, citing their ethical responsibilities. It is time Australia added its voice and prevented Sydney from handing russia one of its first major global sporting platforms since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

✊ The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations has written to Water Polo Australia and the Australian Government calling on them to publicly oppose this decision and push to have it overturned.

📧 Join us in urging Australia not to put out the welcome mat for representatives of a regime responsible for illegal aggression and war crimes. Write to Water Polo Australia and our government leaders now. It takes less than two minutes: standwithukraine.good.do/waterpolo

On this 40th Anniversary, we remember the victims of Chornobyl, the ongoing impacts, and the ongoing threat to Ukraine's people and security.

🇺🇦⚠️ 40 years ago today

On 26 April 1986, the explosion at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant became the worst disaster in the history of nuclear power generation. ☢️

As the Kremlin attempted to cover up the catastrophe, millions were left exposed to nuclear radiation. It was a failure that cost lives 💔, pushed Europe to the verge of disaster 🌍, and exposed the true nature of the Soviet regime.

Today, on this day of mourning, that lesson is being ignored.

russia’s occupation and militarisation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has turned it into a military base. Safety systems have been disabled, external power is regularly cut, and mines have been planted along the perimeter.

In February 2025, a russian drone damaged the shelter over Chornobyl.

These are deliberate threats — not just to Ukraine, but to global safety 🌐.

The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations stands with the Ukrainian World Congress - Свiтовий Конґрес Українців in calling for urgent action:

🛑 The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant must be demilitarised
☢️ russia’s actions - using nuclear facilities as instruments of coercion and global terror — must be recognised and condemned; nuclear safety must never be weaponised
🛡️🇺🇦 Ukraine must be supported to defend its people and infrastructure

Chornobyl showed the cost of silence. The world cannot afford to ignore this warning again. ⚠️

On this solemn Anzac Day, the Association of Ukrainians in Tasmania joins all Australians in remembering and honouring the brave men and women of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and all who have served in defence of freedom, democracy, and peace.
We pay deep respect to the ANZACs who made the ultimate sacrifice on the shores of Gallipoli and in the many conflicts that followed. Their courage, mateship, and unwavering commitment to a better world continue to inspire generations.
Today, as we gather at dawn services and marches across Tasmania — from Hobart and Launceston to smaller communities — we reflect on the shared values that bind us: freedom, resilience, and the willingness to stand against tyranny.
These are the very values that the people of Ukraine are defending today with extraordinary courage against unprovoked aggression. The Ukrainian spirit of resistance echoes the Anzac legacy of standing tall in the face of overwhelming odds.
We, the Ukrainian community of Tasmania, are profoundly grateful to live in a country that upholds these ideals. We thank the Australian Government and the people of Tasmania for their steadfast support for Ukraine’s fight for freedom and sovereignty.
Lest We Forget.
May peace prevail in our hearts, in our communities, and across the world.

Sunday 12th of April, Team Ukraine was honoured to receive the prize for Highest Fundraising Team at the Hobart Marathon Festival 2026 🏆

Despite the icy wind and winter vibes, every single member of the team completed their run.

They ran with purpose.
They ran for Ukrainian frontline hospitals.
They ran because together, we can make a real difference.

The fundraiser is still open for donations:

We congratulate all Ukrainians who today, April 12, 2026, celebrate a bright Easter according to the Orthodox and Greek Catholic tradition! May this day bring joy, warmth, harmony and hope to every family. We wish that the Easter cakes are rosy, the Easter eggs are bright, and the hearts are full of faith and love.
Special words of support to those who today on Foreshadowing Sunday (or Farewell Sunday) remember their deceased relatives and friends. May the bright memory of them warm the soul, and the Easter Resurrection give hope for eternal life. May the Lord rest their souls and give comfort to all who grieve.
The Association of Ukrainians in Tasmania sincerely wishes the entire Ukrainian community — in Australia, in Ukraine and around the world — peace, goodness, health and all the best! May the Easter bell bring hope for the victory of light over darkness, and the Ukrainian spirit remains invincible.
Glory to Ukraine!

We would like to let you know about a fundraising initiative for Ukraine that some members of our community are working on. Please support if you can!

This year, Team Ukraine at the Hobart Marathon Festival is proudly represented by members of our community: Oleksandr Tkachuk, Tania Tkachuk, Sophia Tkachuk, Maryna Ladaniwskyj, Halyna Rys, Anja Merrington, Lilian Ancher, Alistair Webb, Slav Zemnukhov and Greg Zemnukhov.

Our runners are actively preparing for the event while raising funds to support Ukrainian veterans recovering from serious injuries.

With less than two weeks to go, we are close to reaching our goal — and we need your help to get there.

Every donation contributes to vital support, including helping save injured limbs from amputation and aiding recovery.

If you are able, please consider donating or sharing this initiative with others:
https://hmf26.grassrootz.com/ukraine-support-fund/team-ukraine

You are also welcome to join Team Ukraine's tent at the event on April 12 to cheer up for our runners.

Thank you for supporting Ukraine and our community. Slava Ukraini! 💙💛

https://hmf26.grassrootz.com/ukraine-support-fund/team-ukraine

Our week of activities to commemorate the anniversary of the fourth year of the full scale invasion of Ukraine finished with a rally on 28 February outside the Town Hall. We would like to thank everyone who attended the event, helped to prepare, and all those who continue to stand with Ukraine.

We acknowledge our attendees and speakers, Wilkie MP - Independent Member for Clark and Helen Burnet MP - Independent Member for Clark, as well as members of the Lithuanian, Latvian, and Iranian communities who attended in support.

We extend our thanks the 7NEWS Tasmania who captured the event, and ABC Hobart for the interview with the Association of Ukrainians in Tasmania President, Marina Ladaniwskyj, and committed advocate, Mark Corrigan, on 24 February.
(https://www.facebook.com/reel/1493523518958640 and https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/hobart-breakfast/breakfast/106371346). We appreciate the assistance of staff at Tasmania Police and Hobart City Council during the preparation for this event.

This week, we have also appreciated the collaboration with film producers and event managers. Particular thanks go to with the Children in the Fire team, and Director, Evgeny Afineevsky, to enable us to screen the film and experience the Q&A session on Sunday 22 February. We raised valuable funds for the Ukraine Crisis Appeal's programs which support children and young people in Ukraine
(https://www.childreninthefire.com/). We also acknowledge the State Cinema, who hosted Viktor as part of the Europa Film Festival, and provided an opportunity for Marina to speak at the event.

Finally, we would like to thank all of you. Those who act every day, those who continue to stand with and believe in a free Ukraine. It takes all of us.

This month, the Ukrainian community in Tasmania joyfully celebrated the enchanting feast of Malanka.
Two wonderful events were filled with heartfelt conversations about our cherished traditions, spirited dances, joyful merriment, and soul-stirring Ukrainian songs.
Our deepest gratitude goes to the remarkable organizers — Marina Lynne, President of the Association of Ukrainians in Tasmania, and Ivan Shevchenko, dynamic Vice-President, to every dedicated volunteer, and to our extraordinarily talented Ukrainian choir that brought true magic to the celebration!
May the new year fill us all with inspiration, strength, and unity as we work together towards our great Victory!
