Who are some other icons visiting us at O-Week?

Next week, on Monday and Tuesday, we have the incredible and .sangarya.greens! 💚✊🏼

Matthew is a former local councillor from the City of Greater Dandenong, has spent years as a community activist, and will be the Greens lead candidate for the South-East Metro in the November state election!

Lokesh is from the other end of town, north of the river in Preston, where he’s running as the Greens lower house candidate. He also happens to be a Monash PhD student!

We’re so excited to have both of them talking to students and having discussions on making a meaningful difference ✊🏼

We are so excited to announce our first O-Week guest, the absolutely incredible Senator !

As a Senator in the federal parliament, Senator Hodgins-May has a deep understanding of how to advocate for real change on the issues important to students.

We are also so happy to celebrate her legacy of connection with our collective down at Monash!

Make sure to turn up at our stall next week and say hello to the Senator on Wednesday!

Following the release of leaked documents, the resolutely opposes the planned gradin system drafted by Envoy Segal. While we believe antisemitism to be an incredibly important issue to tackle on campus, the explicit conflation of religious and cultural identities with political ideologies is deeply troubling.

Together, we have drafted this statement that explains our concerns and why this model seems unfit to address student safety on campus, but will likely lead to crackdown on legitimate dissent.

Thank you to all who contributed and worked on this 🫶🏼💚

The wants to take a moment to celebrate our amazing members and supporters who turned up and showed their PRIDE 🏳️‍🌈

On Sunday, we went out to help the FABULOUS serve ice cream 🍦 and looks 🪭 at the Pride Street Party in Fitzroy! Our VP and Pres .pdf were collecting signatures for petitions, carrying signs, and connecting with the incredible community.

Radical joy is resistance! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️✊🏼

Yesterday, on January 26, Uni Greens members gathered to support and amplify calls from First Nations groups across the country calling for truth, treaty, justice, and an end to celebrating a day commemorating colonisation, brutalisation, and genocide.

Students from both the Monash University Greens Society - MUGS and the UniMelb Greens were grateful to join the Victorian Greens contingent, hear from countless incredible speakers, and march alongside countless others standing against genocide across so-called Australia.

But we have to do more than showing up, we have to actually make change. For all of us.

🖤💛❤️

No matter the corruption and cronyism of Maduro's oligarchic regime, nothing can justify the unilateral invasion and regime change in a country. International law must always take precedence.
Trump's military operation and abducting of Nicolás Maduro sets a very dangerous precedent that may be exploited by Russia against Ukraine, and China against Taiwan.

Below that is white text reading "WE MUST OPPOSE WAR IN VENEZUELA AND STAND AGAINST AMERICAN IMPERIALISM", with black text lining the right direction reading "monash uni greens statement".
Slide 2: same faded grey background with text reading "The Trump Administration of the USA has launched an unjust and dangerous attack on Venezuela, setting a precedent for intervention grounded squarely in imperial interests.

the Monash Uni Greens STRONGLY condemn this act of aggression, which represents a clear breach of international law, and a superpower set on exploiting the suffering of the Venezuelan people to enrich itself.

The reaction from our own government has been incredibly disappointing and does not meet the criticality of the moment. We call on all Australian political parties, and all Australian universities (including Monash), to condemn this gross atrocity, especially the plans for oil company exploitation in Venezuela. Furthermore, we call for support, assistance and aid to be provided to the civilians of Venezuela, especially those harmed in the attacks."

Slide 3: same faded grey background with text reading "We also condemn Monash University’s ties to weapons companies, including Lockheed Martin and Boeing, who are complicit in these breaches of international law. MUGS call on Monash University to cut ties and discontinue invites to industry events with companies who are complicit, including weapons and American fossil fuel giants.

The people of Venezuela have the right to live in peace and security, just like the people of all nations, and will ultimately-" continued in comments]

We may be a bit late to the party, but our commitment to change in 2026 is no less unwavering 💚

After seeing incredible change in the ending of the Monash Woodside Partnership, we resolve to play our part in the fight to restore ethics to our education and end all ties with blood money, and put the focus on students, not profits. 🍏🕊

Be it arms companies, fossil fuel companies, or any other organisation harming our planet and people around the world, we will fight to end their involvement in all tertiary education! 💞

This morning, Senator introduced a bill into the senate that would force universities around the country to divest from their dirty relationships with fossil fuels, weapons, and gambling.

These partnerships funnel bad actors onto our campuses, and often provide university money going towards the destruction of planet and people.

Divestment isn’t something we want, it’s something we need ✊🏼

Listen to .pdf from Monash, from UniMelb, from UQ, and the incredible reflect on what passing this bill would mean for the communities we care so much about 🫶🏼🫶🏼

Thinking about the MSDI being shut down while the Woodside partnership is maintained has made us angry 😡

Sign .monash’s petition, and do whatever you can to but dump the partnership ✊🏼

We are so excited for our tour of TOMORROW!

In the lead up to an election year, it’s important for us to understand how we build movements inside- and outside of parliament.

That is why we are SO LUCKY to have meet us after our tour! We are looking forward to beautiful sights, challenging conversations, and important planning for Monash and Victoria ✊✊

In the bottom right, there is a photo of a woman with shoulder-length brown hair, glasses, earrings, a black shirt and crossed arms. It is captioned with the cursive text ‘with Kat Copsey MLC’. The body text is as follows: ‘It’s important for students to understand the institutions we are set on changing. We are so excited to have our members be shown around parliament TOMORROW, and meet with the amazing Kat Copsey (the Greens member for the upper-house district including Monash!)’
If you’ve registered, be there on the steps of the Victorian Parliament at 2:45PM! (to get through security screening)]

Yesterday, Monash Law announced that it was going to cut all tutorials for core subjects ❌📚

Not just does this massively cut contact hours for students, but gets rid of the best opportunity for law students to connect one-on-one with tutors and ask questions, instead relying on the large workshops.

This is not a move made by a university without money, but instead one intent in becoming more of a degree factory 🏭🎓

Email the faculty, spread the news, and if you’re impacted by these changes, make sure to contact relevant student bodies like the Monash Law Students' Society and Monash Student Association (MSA).

[Image ID:
1 - a newspaper is up top next to a Monash University Greens logo. The title of the newspaper reads ‘Breaking Campus News’. Below is a title reading ‘Monash Law Slashes Tutorials’. The body text reads as such: ‘Monash Law has cut tutorials from all core law units for a two year “trial period.” The faculty calls this a positive change, telling struggling students to “cut down on paid work.” Follow the LSS to stay informed and take action against the cuts.’. A graph sits beside showing a graphic of average tutorial sizes (15-20) compared to average workshop sizes (50-80). A logo reading ‘Echo-System. A progressive Monash News project.’ With a megaphone is at the bottom.

2 - a header reading ‘25% less class time for all core law subjects’ is in pink at the top. Below, the body text reads: “These cuts will reduce contact hours for students in core subjects by 25%, and reduce the amount of time that students have directly with tutors and staff.
These cuts aren’t being implemented by a uni short on cash, having reported record revenue and small deficits compared to previous years (Monash Uni, 2025). Instead, it looks like a move made by a University increasingly seeking to become a degree factory.
Follow the relevant student groups and advocacy bodies, and send an email to the law faculty with your opinions on these cuts.” A ‘stop the cuts’ logo sits at the bottom alongside an Echo-systems logo.]
