Murray hardyhead return to the South Australian Riverland 🐟

With funding support from the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species Program, Nature Glenelg Trust (NGT) and Millewa Pumping have successfully reintroduced the critically endangered Murray Hardyhead to a managed wetland in South Australia’s Riverland.
The Murray Hardyhead is one of Australia’s most threatened native fish, with only a handful of populations remaining in the lower Murray River floodplains of Victoria, NSW and South Australia.
Over the past two years, our project team and partners have:
• Supported remnant wild populations
• Established contingency populations in surrogate wetlands (including dams)
• Prepared natural wetlands for future reintroduction
This latest reintroduction follows extensive rehabilitation work by NGT and the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board (MRLB) after major flooding in 2022/23. After a drawdown to eradicate Carp in early 2025, Environmental Water was delivered to create prime habitat, through a partnership between the MRLB, the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office and the Central Irrigation Trust.
The fish released in the Riverland were raised in a surrogate dam in northwest Victoria, carefully acclimatised, and transported to their new home. Rangers from the River Murray and Mallee Aboriginal Corporation (RMMAC) were on site to assist with the release.
We thank the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office, SA Department for Environment and Water - Weir Pool Team, and Northwest Aquaculture for their support.
This achievement reflects the strength of collaboration between partners across the Murray-Darling Basin working together to secure a future for this remarkable native species.

Happy International Women’s Day 💜

Feeling incredibly fortunate today reflecting on the amazing women in my life — especially one of my very best friends, who I’ve had the privilege of working alongside in our family company for nearly 20 years.

Building a business together isn’t always easy, but doing it with someone you trust, respect, and genuinely enjoy spending time with makes the journey pretty special. Through the challenges, the wins, and everything in between, I’m so grateful we’ve been able to grow both a business and a friendship that means the world to me.

Here’s to strong women, supportive partnerships, and the incredible impact women make every day.

World wildlife Day 🌍

United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD) is celebrated every year on 3 March to celebrate wild animals and plants and recognize the unique roles and contributions of wildlife to people and the planet.

This 🌏 World Wildlife Day, we’re proud to stand beside our rivers and the wildlife that call them home.

At Millewa Pumping, caring for water isn’t just our job — it’s our responsibility. Every project we undertake along our river systems is guided by a commitment to protect fragile ecosystems, support healthy waterways, and safeguard native wildlife for generations to come.

From sustainable pumping solutions to environmentally conscious practices, we work hand-in-hand with our natural landscapes — not against them. 🐾💧

Today, and into the future, we remain dedicated to preserving the life, beauty, and biodiversity of our rivers. Because healthy waterways mean thriving wildlife — and a stronger tomorrow for us all.
