From uncertainty to hope — Arlindo Piedade da Cruz’s journey is a powerful reminder that education can transform lives.
Coming from a simple family in Lacluta, Viqueque, Arlindo once believed that continuing his education after high school would be impossible. With six siblings and only his father working as a security guard, financial struggles nearly forced him to give up on his dreams.
But in 2022, through the Community Scholarship Program supported by Carmel Impact, Arlindo was given a chance to continue studying at St. Don Bosco Technical Vocational School in Comoro.
Although he originally dreamed of studying electricity, he was placed in the carpentry specialization after passing the entry test. The journey was not easy, especially with technical design and calculations, but Arlindo chose perseverance over giving up.
On 17 April 2025, he proudly graduated from his vocational education journey — and today, he is already working at Timor Plaza Dili, hired by the same company where he completed his internship.
For Arlindo, education did not only provide skills. It gave him confidence, hope, and the opportunity to become a role model for his family and community.
His dream continues: to support his parents and siblings, continue working, and one day become a professional civil engineer.

Da incerteza à esperança — a história de Arlindo Piedade da Cruz mostra como a educação pode transformar vidas.
Vindo de uma família simples em Lacluta, Viqueque, Arlindo acreditava que continuar os estudos após o ensino secundário seria impossível. Com seis irmãos e apenas o pai trabalhando como segurança, as dificuldades financeiras quase o fizeram desistir dos seus sonhos.
Mas em 2022, através do Programa de Bolsa Comunitária apoiado pela Carmel Impact, Arlindo recebeu a oportunidade de continuar os estudos no curso técnico vocacional Dom Bosco, em Comoro.
Embora sonhasse estudar eletricidade, foi colocado na especialização de carpintaria após passar no teste de admissão. A caminhada não foi fácil, especialmente nas disciplinas de desenho e cálculos técnicos, mas Arlindo nunca desistiu.
No dia 17 de abril de 2025, concluiu com sucesso a sua formação profissional — e hoje já trabalha no Timor Plaza Dili, contratado pela mesma empresa onde realizou o estágio.
Para Arlindo, a educação não trouxe apenas competências técnicas, mas também confiança, esperança e a oportunidade de se tornar um exemplo para a sua família e comunidade.
O seu sonho continua: trabalhar, apoiar os pais e irmãos, e um dia tornar-se engenheiro civil profissional.
“Para todos os jovens: nunca desistam. Continuem tentando e acreditando que sempre existe um caminho para alcançar os sonhos.” (diesse Arlindo).

Tetum and Portugues below:
The School Feeding Program at EBC Zumalai Catholic School is a national government program that supports students’ nutrition, encourages active participation in class, and provides economic support for the community. The government of Timor-Leste provides funding to support students’ daily meal needs. To complement and strengthen the implementation of this program, Carmel Impact has provided additional support to improve the school meal environment for students.
As part of this support, Carmel Impact assisted with the construction of a dining hall to provide students with a safe and comfortable place to eat during the school feeding program. This has helped create a more organized and positive environment for students during mealtimes.
Carmel Impact also supported the rehabilitation of the school kitchen to improve food preparation, hygiene, and storage conditions. In addition, kitchen equipment and utensils were provided, including a refrigerator, plate rack, cooking utensils, and other essential materials needed to support the daily operation of the feeding program.
Through this collaborative effort, the program aims to improve student wellbeing, nutrition, and the overall learning environment for children at EBC Zumalai.

O Programa de Alimentação Escolar na Escola Católica EBC Zumalai é um programa Nacional do Governo que apoia a nutrição dos estudantes, incentiva a participação ativa nas aulas e fornece apoio económico à comunidade. O Governo Timor-Leste disponibiliza financiamento para apoiar as necessidades diárias de alimentação dos estudantes. Para complementar e fortalecer a implementação deste programa, a Carmel Impact forneceu apoio adicional para melhorar o ambiente do programa de alimentação escolar para os estudantes.
Como parte deste apoio, a Carmel Impact auxiliou na construção de um refeitório para proporcionar aos estudantes um espaço seguro e confortável para fazerem as suas refeições durante o programa de alimentação escolar. Isto ajudou a criar um ambiente mais organizado e positivo para os estudantes durante as refeições.
A Carmel Impact também apoiou a reabilitação da cozinha da escola para melhorar a preparação dos alimentos, a higiene e as condições de armazenamento. Além disso, foram fornecidos equipamentos e utensílios de cozinha, incluindo um frigorífico, suporte para pratos, utensílios de cozinha e outros materiais essenciais necessários para apoiar o funcionamento diário do programa de alimentação escolar.
Através deste esforço colaborativo, o programa visa melhorar o bem-estar dos estudantes, a nutrição e o ambiente geral de aprendizagem das crianças da EBC Zumalai.

Introducing our 2026 Community Scholarship Students: Ana Paula (Accounting), Aniceto (High School), Atanacio (Language Course), Zania (Economics), Henri (Pharmacy), Zelia (Public Administration), Maria (Public Administration), Epifania (Boarding House), Jelcia (Boarding House), Jefery (Engineering), Jeferino (High school), Josefina (High School), and Roque (Boarding house).
Carmel Impact recently welcomed a new group of 2026 Community Scholarship students through an orientation meeting. These students come from different municipalities across Timor-Leste, each with their own hopes and dreams of continuing education and building a better future.
Before joining the program, they went through a selection process, including applications and interviews. Through this process, Carmel Impact identified motivated young people who are determined to continue their studies despite financial challenges and limited opportunities.
Carmel Impact remains committed to supporting young people by creating opportunities and hope for those who once felt there was no pathway to continue their education and pursue their dreams.

On September 20, 2025, our Community Scholarship Program students welcomed students and teachers from Whitefriars College, Australia, to Timor-Leste for a fun and inspiring day of friendship and cultural exchange.
The students shared traditions, songs, dances, and even sports like footy, while learning about each other’s families, hobbies, and dreams. Our scholarship students were especially enthusiastic about practicing English and learning more about Australia.
This special exchange strengthened friendships, created unforgettable memories, and showed how cultural connection can bring people together across nations.
We are grateful to Whitefriars College for this meaningful exchange and continued partnership

Relembrando um dos momentos marcantes de 2025…
No dia 20 de setembro de 2025, os estudantes do nosso Programa de Bolsas Comunitárias acolheram alunos e professores do Whitefriars College, Austrália, em Timor-Leste para um dia divertido e inspirador de amizade e intercâmbio cultural.
Os estudantes partilharam tradições, músicas, danças e até desportos como o “footy”, enquanto aprendiam sobre as famílias, hobbies e sonhos uns dos outros. Os nossos bolseiros demonstraram grande entusiasmo em praticar inglês e conhecer melhor a Austrália.
Este intercâmbio fortaleceu amizades, criou memórias inesquecíveis e mostrou como a ligação cultural pode unir pessoas entre nações.

We’re proud to look back on one of our 2025 highlights as we celebrate the achievements of our community scholarship students, Sebastião Fonseca and Zélia Alves, who graduated with Nursing degrees in Public Health from the Institute of Health Sciences ( ICS).
Their graduation was a joyful moment for their families and for all of us at Carmel Impact, reflecting their dedication to education and the support they received along the way. Sebastião and Zélia also expressed heartfelt gratitude to our donors and supporters, whose generosity made their journey possible.
