Our donations page closed last night and we are so proud to announce that our final fundraising total is $46,282!

YOU are amazing! ❤️

Thank you to everyone who came to ride for James, support our family and raise money for Challenge supporting kids with cancer. Thank you to our incredible volunteer team, and the hours of work many of you gave us. Without you, this event was not possible.

Our community is something really special. During days when our world feels like it’s divisive, angry, lacking empathy and lacking understanding, we hope that you can take a moment to reflect on how OUR community came together to make a difference; lead by James’ courage, love, indelible bravery and love of life.

Our boy, you are mighty.

Events are only as good as the volunteers behind them, and we had one of the best crews out there!

We had a team of over 60 incredible volunteers assembled on ride day; out on course, checking riders in, cooking lunch, keeping drinks cold, setting up and packing down, and keeping you safe.

This is what so many of the conversations in our volunteer chat groups looked like on ride day, and we loved seeing every single one of them. 💙

Well, that was amazing!

Thank you, to everyone who came to ride with us on Sunday. To our community and the new friends we made.

Join In for James was a heart lead project for us. A way to honour the memory of our beautiful James, his life, his courage and his love of adventure. On Sunday, we felt so much love for him and our family, and so much support for Challenge.

We had 217 registered riders, and seeing so many of you on course was really amazing. We’re so proud of our community, our crews, and our riders.

We have lots of photos to show you over the next week, and we’ll share our final fundraising tally!

Post ride sore legs?! We’ve got you sorted! 🙌

We’re so excited to welcome Sam and the team at Exercise Thought into the Join In for James community. Not only are they passionate about helping people move better and feel stronger, they’ve generously donated massage vouchers and physio clinic vouchers for our riders. Let’s be honest… you might need them after ride day! 🚴‍♀️

It means so much to have supporters who truly know the importance of recovery, care and looking after your body — especially after 30km of riding for a great cause, and Sam will be riding with us on ride day.

Meet the inspiration behind Join In
for James, our beautiful son James.

James was just 16 when he passed from complications from his cancer treatments. In late 2023 he was admitted to RCH for a bone marrow transplant, and as a complication from his transplant, he developed a secondary cancer. He spent over 400 consecutive days in hospital; a lot of days that were full of fear and the worst of sickness. His indescribable courage, stoicism and bravery, and humour were the leading lights through it all.

James was an amazing kid. Simply, to know him was to love him. A beautiful brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin and a friend. He was smart, calm, funny, courageous, gentle and adventurous. He had plans to become a pilot. He loved aviation and flying. And at such a young age, he was already brilliant at it. He loved the outdoors. He loved camping with family and friends, and he loved exploring new places. One of the things he loved to do the most was ride with mates. And it’s because of that, we honour him and his life with this ride.

Join In for James is a call out to ride for James. And to raise money for the charity that supported him and our family during his illness. Who still support us now.

So grab your bike, grab your mates and ride one of the trails that James spent time on with friends. Ride with us. Ride for James.

Lewis and his family are riding for James.

Lewis is the big brother of Austin, who we met at RCH when Austin and James were both inpatients. We were ward neighbours with Austin and his mum and dad for a long time. Austin is getting stronger every day, and enjoying his visits at playgroup at the Family Center. And because of the inclusive family care that Challenge offer, Lewis has been able to attend camps and meet new friends and other kids his own age who have travelled a similar road to his family, offering connection and understanding, especially while Austin was having treatment.

Lewis is riding for James, and for all the kids and families who rely on Challenge.

We’re so grateful to welcome Marc Pittonet into our Join In for James community. Congrats on the great win tonight, Marc! 💙🤍

Marc will be joining us for our bbq lunch, firing up the BBQ for our riders as they come in.

Marc’s connection to James started during James’ long stay in hospital. Marc would come in to RCH to visit and spend time with James. Those moments of connection, laughter and normality while playing cards, meant so much to James — and to us. We will always be grateful for the time he gave so generously. We’re thrilled to have him there on ride day, looking after our riders just as he looked out for James.
