Only a few days ago, the Venice Biennale opened — one of the largest and most influential cultural events in the world.
From 2022 to 2025, Russia was banned from participating in the Biennale. But in 2026, Italy allowed Russia to return.
The European Union responded by withdrawing a €2 million grant from the Biennale. It did not change the decision.
Then artists and cultural figures appealed to the Italian government, demanding the cancellation of Russia’s participation. More than 10,000 representatives of the cultural community signed the petition. In protest, the Biennale jury resigned. Yet the Russian pavilion remained.
The next step came from other countries, which launched ongoing protests. In practice, the Russian pavilion became blocked and was eventually closed to visitors. Protesters continue to block its entrances and exits to prevent any return to “business as usual.”
I want to draw your attention to something important: how much diplomatic effort, money, and influence Russia still invests in promoting the myth of “great Russian culture.” And how many thousands of people must unite simply to prove something obvious — that murderers and aggressors have no place among those who represent culture.
If I were in Italy today, I would stand among those protesters.
But we are here, in Australia.
So what can we do — individually and together?
I believe the answer is clear: introduce Australia to Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian artists. Show that Ukrainian culture is a strong and ancient tree, while Russian culture has for centuries appropriated its branches and roots.
At Harmony Bridge: Ukraine – Australia, we need your presence at our events. We need to stand together as a living force that breaks the stereotype of “great Russians” and “unknown Ukrainians.”
Together, we are strong.
The events surrounding the Venice Biennale remind us once again: culture is also a battlefield. And on this front, every one of us has a voice.
Всього кілька днів тому відкрилася Венеційська бієнале — одна з найбільших і найвпливовіших культурних подій сучасності.
З 2022 до 2025 року росії було заборонено брати участь у бієнале. Але у 2026 році Італія повернула росію до числа учасників.
Реакція Євросоюзу була жорсткою: бієнале позбавили гранту у 2 мільйони євро. Але навіть це не змінило рішення.
Тоді до уряду Італії звернулися митці та діячі культури з вимогою скасувати участь росії. Петицію підписали понад 10 тисяч представників культурної сфери. Наслідок - у відставку пішло журі бієнале. Але російський павільйон залишився.
Наступним кроком стали протести інших країн та безстрокова акція спротиву. По суті, російський павільйон заблокований і зрештою закритий для відвідувачів. Протестувальники й далі блокують його входи та виходи, аби не допустити повернення до «нормальності».
Хочу звернути вашу увагу на інше: скільки дипломатичних зусиль, коштів і впливу росія досі вкладає у просування міфу про «велику російську культуру». І скільки тисячам людей доводиться докладати зусиль, щоб довести очевидне: вбивцям і агресорам не місце серед тих, хто представляє культуру.
Якби я зараз була в Італії — я стояла б серед тих протестувальників.
Але ми тут, в Австралії.
Що можемо робити ми — кожен окремо і всі разом?
Я знаю відповідь: знайомити Австралію з українською культурою та українськими митцями. Показувати, що українська культура — це потужне, глибоке дерево, а російська культура століттями лише привласнювала його гілки й коріння.
Нам, Harmony Bridge: Ukraine – Australia, потрібна ваша участь у наших подіях. Нам потрібно бути разом — живою силою, яка руйнує стереотип про «великих росіян» і «невідомих українців».
Тільки разом ми — сила.
Події навколо Венеційської бієнале ще раз доводять: культура — це теж фронт. І на цьому фронті кожен із нас може сказати своє слово.
