Builder does the whole job right … and still cops the blame.

End of the job. Client’s happy. You’re about to lock up.

Then … “Do you think I need a new roof?”

Not in the scope, but you quote it anyway.

Too expensive. Their mate knows a roofer.

Cladding’s on and fixed. Flashings are on. Fine … he’ll have to work around it.

He strips the roof … then cuts all the supporting battens.

Cladding left loose.

Guess who gets blamed? Not the roofer.

Of course the client and the trade both turn on the builder.

Make that make sense.

The government is only making the trade shortage worse and doesn’t care about the trades already in the industry.

Fast tracking apprentices to fix a shortage they helped create ... while the trades who finished their time and walked away get ignored completely.

Then there’s the mature age push. Robin Reffo put it best.

They’ve got their heads screwed on. But are they going to be on only $900 a week?

A bloke leaving a $1,700 office job isn’t taking that.

The government tips in $10k. Doesn’t even cover his tax.

We’re already running at a loss taking on an apprentice. That’s the rule of thumb.

So it comes out of our pockets. Again.

Word of mouth is great ... until it isn’t.

I asked a carpentry business owner if he’d ever used LinkedIn.

Once. To talk to a draftsman.

And look, I get it. Word of mouth is simple and it works.

But what happens when you hit a dry period and you’ve got guys to keep busy?

You start quoting jobs you don’t actually want.

You get beaten down on price.

You break even, or you go backwards.

LinkedIn wasn’t built for us, and there’s way too much w**k factor to it.

Good trades are bloody hard to find.

You’ve got guys who are lazy.
Don’t give a f**k.
Don’t want to work.

But there are still great tradies out there.

The problem is nobody’s doing what it takes to actually attract them … then they blame the shortage.

And the good ones are sitting in companies that don’t value them.

Guys I know personally who any business would be lucky to have.

Meanwhile there’s heaps of good companies looking for exactly that.

Neither one knows the other exists.

You have to be displaying your reputation to attract these good trades and subbies.

There’s never been a better time to be a tradie.

I took over a job recently that had been sitting there for months.

Builder overcommitted, couldn’t finish, and the client couldn’t find anyone to take it over.

It’s really not that hard.
Turn up, communicate, finish the job.

But there’s a crazy amount of trades that can’t do it.

Which means there’s a crazy amount of opportunity for the ones that can.

Problem is, being a good tradie isn’t enough.

You’ve got to prove it.

And a good looking Instagram or website doesn’t prove you’re a good tradie.

If you want to attract good clients and good businesses, and charge what you’re worth, you need something that actually proves it.

Tradies aren’t paid enough … and it’s got nothing to do with your boss.

Your pay is decided by someone you’ve never met.

When your boss quotes a job … he’s up against three other companies.

Client gets all three back. Same line items. Same paper. Nothing separating any of you.

So he picks the cheapest. Every single time. And honestly you can’t blame him.

That number he had to drop to win it … that’s your wage.

Your boss isn’t tight. He had nothing to show except a price.

No proof of the quality of his work. Nothing from the blokes who’ve actually worked with him.

And we all know how easy it is to take a couple of nice photos of s**t work and have it look great on Instagram.
