Event Recap: Impact Led Venture Creation for Migrants and International Students 🌍

Last Thursday, Uncommon Collective and Wombat Collective co-hosted an intimate gathering that brought together an inspiring group of migrants and international students to explore how lived experiences can shape entrepreneurial journeys.

The room was filled with engaged participants from diverse backgrounds who came eager to learn about starting their own businesses or expanding existing ventures. Through open dialogue, attendees shared personal stories, exchanged practical insights, and built upon each other’s ideas. From tackling community challenges to finding innovative ways to turn identity into opportunity 🌟

Speakers Jamal, Eli, and Kasey, as well as moderator Shiao Lu, had a conversation that moved beyond business fundamentals, discussing how culture, migration, and resilience intersect with entrepreneurship. Together, we explored how ventures can be designed to solve real problems facing diverse communities.

✨ The event spotlighted the international student perspective through Wombat Collective, while also amplifying migrant founder voices through Uncommon Collective’s mission. With this, we built upon a recongition how diverse lived experiences can drive social impact and innovation.

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us, and we are excited to continue to build bridges between communities, cultures, and ventures 🚀

✨🌷 Blooms Reborn: The largest floral arrangements we've collected!

We’re excited to share that our latest Blooms Reborn collection includes the two largest floral arrangements we've received, thanks to the incredible generosity of Swinburne University’s Graduation team, who donated every onstage floral arrangement from their recent ceremony at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre 💐🎓

One beautiful bouquet has found a new home at Jean McKendry Neighbourhood Centre in North Melbourne, a vibrant space hosting social and recreational activities for older people, their carers, and culturally diverse community groups. The flowers will brighten the centre as decorations and be shared with elders and community members to bring joy into their day 🌸💛

The other bouquet will be brought to Kensington Neighbourhood Centre’s sensory garden, a therapeutic space supporting people living with dementia to stay connected and engaged with nature, as well as social groups to use for wellbeing purposes. This floral arrangement will now be an addition to the garden's sensory stimulation space 🌿🌼

Great thank you to Swinburne University for supporting us in transforming floral wasge from events into something that continues to bloom brighter into our local communities🌏🫶

🌼 Pop-Up Tea and Crafts: Connections across Generations (August Edition) 🌼

Back at Grand Cedar for round two, and this time, with even more students, more smiles, and more beautiful moments shared! 🥰☕🧶

As part of Loneliness Awareness Week, international students and elderly residents once again came together in a cozy space of storytelling, laughter, and creativity. Over afternoon tea, students and residents deepened connections through a meaningful worry doll project 💌🧵💬

This time, even more worry dolls were made, and even more stories exchanged across cultures and generations 💐💖 There was even lots of dancing and laughter involved!

We left with full hearts, and are grateful for the time and moments shared. Until next time 🫶

Roots and Reflections was a beautifully intimate afternoon of honest conversations, cultural connection, and deep reflection 💬✨🌿

From navigating stigma to sharing stories, international students and multicultural youth came together to explore the nuances of mental health and wellbeing through a cultural lens. The story circles encouraged meaningful bonds, and the powerhouse panel brought raw insights and heartfelt truths through the conversation.

A huge thank you to our incredible speakers:
🧡 Negin Sadeghian, Psychologist & Art Therapist
🧡 Daksh Agrawal, International Student & Peer Advocate
🧡 Sonia Kaurah, Founder of Tala Thrive

This event was co-hosted by Wombat Collective and Tala Thrive, and we hope that Roots and Reflections was a small but powerful step toward more inclusive mental health spaces, where people from diverse and multicultural background can be seen, heard, and supported.

Here’s to more safe spaces, and more conversations ahead. Always remember that your story and presence matters.

🌸💌 Impacts of The Petal Post: Acts of kindness building bridges between communities.

Earlier this month, 25 handwritten cards made by international students and multicultural domestic students at our event, The Petal Post, were delivered to Grand Cedar, an aged care home under Medical and Aged Care Group.

Each card was made with repurposed dried flowers and heartfelt messages of connection and love - a gift from the next generation to those who the laid the foundations of this country and made it what it is today 💐

During a special afternoon tea, shown above by these photos and videos, the cards were read aloud by both residents and staff. The room was filled with warmth, laughter and tears - moments of genuine deep emotions that reminded everyone how loved and cherished the residents are. Students from across the globe expressed their gratitude for these residents' contributions to Australia, and shared personalized messages that bridges cultures, stories and life experiences 🌍🩷

Staff told us it was one of the most beautiful and moving afternoons they've ever experienced.

Thank you to those who supported the event and who continue to support Wombat Collective in making this possible. This is only the beginning of a growing bridge between local and international communities coming together 🫶

Giving a second life to beautiful flowers! 🌸🌿

As part of our Blooms Reborn project, we repurposed leftover flowers from a local Mother’s Day event that were set to be discarded and delivered them alongside cards from The Petal Post to an aged care home in Coburg.

These blooms will be used to decorate the home , brighten up residents' days, and even be reused by the residents themselves in their own flower repurposing activities ✨💐

Spreading intergenerational and intercultural joy, stories, and handmade love from the international student community to local Australians! 💌

This is just the beginning of reimagining what flower waste can become when given the chance to be reborn through creativity and care. 💝❇️

Our second event, The Petal Post, was an amazing success! 💐📬

Students, both domestic and international, from diverse cultures and backgrounds came together to create 25 beautiful handmade cards with dried flowers, messages, and art. Each one will be delivered directly to an elderly Australian in aged care, bridging cultures and generations through creativity and kindness 🌏💌

It was a day full of laughter and connections, not only in the cards, but also among our participants too💡✨ New friendships were made, stories were exchanged, and we created something truly meaningful for the local community!

Part of our Blooms Reborn event series, this event shows how flower waste can be turned into something meaningful - and how multicultural and local communities can come together through simple acts of kindness and care 🫶🌸

Fresh flowers are stunning—but they unfortunately come at hidden environmental costs and short-lived beauty as most are tossed within days!

That’s where flower repurposing comes in!
Instead of letting blooms go to waste, this is why it's important to give them a second life -reducing landfill ♻️, conserving resources 🌱, and spreading joy to those who need it most 🫶

Our very first flower collection round for Blooms Reborn is coming soon, alongside the first event for our promotional series! 🌸✨ Stay tuned for dates and details on how you can get involved 👀
