Happy National Week of Deaf People from Jas and Raquel at Deaf Kids Carer Collective. Jas wanted to share with you one of their favourite parts of our program earlier this year when a young Deaf person showed they were really affirmed in their Deaf identity.

Jas grew up without access to Auslan and Deaf role models and they did not experience Deaf pride until they became connected to community as an adult and learned their language. It is this experience which motivated Jas to be part of setting up the Deaf Kids Carer Collective to better support Deaf kids and carers of Deaf people to collectively work towards strong and positive futures for Deaf youth.

Slide 1:

Cream background with text: Being Deaf is Best!

This April, during one of our family picnics, a Deaf child proudly wrote ‘being Deaf is best!’ on the concrete in Deaf English.

This might seem like an everyday thing but unfortunately not many Deaf and hard of hearing kids (or adults) can access this type of Deaf pride and feel a strong Deaf identity.
Has a picture of writing on concrete that says being Deaf is best.

Slide 2: Heading says ‘Being Deaf is Best!’ Text reads: This National Week of Deaf People
Deaf Kids Carer Collective is hoping for a future where all Deaf youth feel a strong sense of pride in their Deaf identity and signed language.

🎉TOMORROW is the day! Have you booked your spot yet?
Join us for We’re in the Same Boat: Raising Deaf Kids – a free, live webinar for families, carers and community members supporting Deaf children.

Meet your hosts:
👋 Raquel Pantelic – a hard of hearing, Disabled parent of a Deaf child and a community services professional.
👋 Jas Shirrefs – a grown-up Deaf-Disabled kid and accredited social worker.

Raquel and Jas are both passionate advocates for deaf and disabled human rights. They are committed to improving the wellbeing of parents and carers and tackling the challenges many families face accessing services, support and real-life information.

We would like to invite you as the mum, dad, grandma, grandpa, sibling or family of a deaf child to come along and watch our panel of parents: Raelene, Peter and Emily talk about their experiences as a caring family member of a deaf person along with about their involvement in the deaf community.

It can be a lonely journey for parents of deaf kids:
💼 The local area coordinator’s office trying to work out the NDIS 💼
🧑‍🏫 On the phone to a teacher to talk about how school is going 🧑‍🏫
🏊Trying to find a swim teacher who can sign or use gesture🏊
🏥Trying to advocate about your child’s health or additional diagnosis when doctors just see deafness🏥

From our experience we have found that often parents or carers for Deaf people don’t always know that they have developed skills in advocacy, language support and understanding services. Register now for our free webinar.

Auslan and English event, captioning provided.

5th of June from 1pm to 1:45pm.
