Celebrating World Milk Day!

TODAY IS World Milk Day, a day noted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to recognise the importance of milk as a global food.

Milk is incredibly important to Australians, with over 95% of Australian households buying milk every single week!

It’s a multi billion dollar industry, not only domestically, but also in dairy exports, including whole milk powder, skim milk powder and value added baby formulas.

This year, World Milk Day organisers have produced a ‘Dairy Facts on a Page’ and handouts to help you share the wonderful story of milk and all its benefits with your customers.

The World Milk Day theme this year is “Celebrating Women Farmers,” to honor the UN’s International Year of the Woman Farmer.

DIAA is happy to support World Milk Day and in so doing acknowledge women farmers, especially dairy farmers and our milk manufacturers on this day!

Day 2 of the DIAA Victorian Dairy Conference wrapped up today with some fabulous conference sessions, and an inspirational and moving guest speaker, followed by the Victorian Dairy Product Competition Awards.

Some fascinating insights on Quality Management were shared by those with a lifetime in the industry: May Lee from Lactalis-Mainland Dairy, Steve Smith from Burra Foods and Tihn Hyun from DSM Firmenich.

May, Steve and Tihn outlined how Quality is at the very heart of establishing trust and building brand image between manufacturer and customers and that quality management was a fabulous springboard to a successful dairy food career.

There was not a dry eye in the house following the truly moving and inspirational presentation by Keynote Speaker Bec Daniher who lost her dad Neale Daniher only last Monday after a brave 13-year fight with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

The legendary AFL Player and coach was 2025 Australian of the Year and devoted those last years raising funds to search for a cure and care for those with MND.

Bec abandoned her own sporting career as an internationally competitive rower to become a key driver and spokesperson for Fight MND which has so far raised an astonishing $140 million for MND research and care.

Bec described how rather than be defined by MND, Neale Daniher used it to inspire him and others to fight for a cause, saying even in the hardest times you have a choice of attitude.

Bec is continuing that fight for those who may benefit from it in the future.

Or as Bec put it: “Society grows great when everyone plants a tree in whose shade they shall never sit.”

Her take-home messages were:
1. “Dad chose not to be defined by the disease but to fight to take on the beast. Hope is contagious
2. Find the opportunity – even in adversity look for a silver lining and find purpose
3. Plant trees – You don’t get to choose what happens to you, but you can choose how you respond.

The DIAA sincerely thanks Bec for her courage and inspiration and for being part of this year's DIAA Victorian Conference.

The Dairy Industry Association of Australia Victorian State Conference is underway in Melbourne with an impressive lineup of industry speakers, addressing the theme of Future Dairy.

The morning kicked off with a welcome by Victorian DIAA President Adam Tyson and introduction by DIAA National President Doug Eddy who spoke about the need to support the development of professional skills in the dairy manufacturing sector.

Madelyn Irvine from Dairy Australia presented on the latest Dairy Situation and Outlook, followed by a session on Global Dairy Market Dynamics from Rabobank Research Analyst Mick Harvey.

Prior to lunch the group heard from Australian Dairy Products Federation (ADPF) CEO Janine Waller on the domestic and international pressures facing the dairy processing sector and the ADPF’s strategy to position the industry to withstand these challenges.

Rob Ireland from conveyor belt manufacturer and DIAA Partner Intralox kicked off the after-lunch session by introducing Sensory and Consumer Science specialist Sara Mawhinney from Kantar Insights Australia with some fascinating insights on ‘Sensory 101’ on new product development.

The conference continues with more presentations, the DIAA National AGM and Victorian Branch forum in the afternoon.

The event culminates on Friday with a special guest speaker from FightMND and the Awards Luncheon and Trophy presentation on Friday, followed by the Australian Dairy Awards of Excellence in the evening.

This issue has all the results from the DIAA’s first Dairy Products Competition of the year in Perth.

Read the fascinating insights from the massive Food Ingredients China (FIC) event from joint DIAA/Novonesis scholarship winners, Leesa Chen and Brandon Reynolds.

Meanwhile, the DIAA is taking part in the Restaurant & Foodservice show at the International Convention Centre in Sydney 25-27 May, ahead of the DIAA Victorian Conference and the Awards of Excellence (28–29 May).

In news, Fonterra has completed the sale of its ‘Mainland’ Foods and the Bega Cheese brand to the newly formed Lactalis-Mainland Dairy company.

Maxum Foods' Dairy Update reports on the ADPI Annual Conference in Chicago which showed pressure on both global dairy supply and demand.

Analyst, Eliza Redfern outlines how cost pressures are putting a lid on dairy shelf price rises. Amid this backdrop, dairy farmer organisations are pushing for a 30-cents a litre increase in farm-gate milk prices to ensure they remain viable.

On a sad note, we note the passing of Alison Lansley of Long Paddock Cheese and The Cheese School, Castlemaine. Alison leaves behind a lasting legacy for Australian artisan cheesemakers.
