At AEU Branch council on August 1st, 2026 Bill moved Fight TheCrisis ‘s motion: Divest from Militarism: Invest in Public Education.

Bill is a Primary School teacher, third-generation AEU member and organising member of Fight the Crisis and Teachers and School Staff for Palestine.

“Comrades, we are an education union.
If we won’t argue that public money belongs in public education instead of militarism, who will?“

Statement in support of John Morris:

At the behest of the tawdry right wing media, teachers are again being tyrannised for doing their jobs. The Daily Telegraph, a risible and derelict organ only interested in promoting hate and denying the truth is attempting to counter the growth of informed concern about Israel’s genocide of Palestinians. Australians are challenging the zionist narrative of events in Palestine, and as a result, the right are searching for individual teachers to persecute, hoping to distract the public from the truth of genocide.

A recent victim of this organised repression is John Morris, a teacher and long standing NSW Teachers Federation Councillor, who is having to defend himself against false accusations while forcibly suspended without pay from his teaching role. The Department appears to be working in concert with the right wing media to isolate and silence those who wish to pursue their life’s work of teaching students the critical skills necessary to moral and physical survival in a terrifying world.

We of Teachers and School Staff 4 Palestine stand with John Morris, and with other teachers and school staff who speak the truth and who seek to educate young people to protect themselves and each other from the militaristic juggernaut which threatens their futures. We reject the Hub and say no to the threadbare ideologies of a decrepit media and its authoritarian minions.

We are saddened to hear of the loss of Dr Tim Read, a staunch supporter of human rights who served as the MLA for Brunswick. Tim was a rare figure in our politics, absolutely committed to his electorate, for whom he worked with a deep understanding of the implications of international affairs for people everywhere.

Teachers and School Staff for Palestine Victoria are deeply grateful for his unstinting support and friendship in the struggle for a free Palestine. This included practical help which has allowed us to deliver material to teachers across Victoria and Australia.

We especially thank him for his voice at rallies and protest actions at a time when others in power shrank from speaking out against genocide.

Our condolences to his family and comrades.

Teachers and School Staff for Palestine stand in solidarity with their comrades in healthcare in condemning Premier Jacinta Allan’s plans to establish partnerships between Victorian and Israeli hospitals.

In the run-up to the state election, Premier Jacinta Allan has announced her government’s plans to “pursue a new, formal, long-term partnership between Victoria and Israel’s leading hospitals”.

“Allan told guests that governments needed to do more to highlight Israel’s achievements in medicine, technology and scientific research.” (JWIRE, 18 June 2026).

These plans have been hatched amid “ongoing concerns about antisemitism and changing perceptions of Israel among younger Australians.” (JWIRE, 18 June 2026)
