Saturday was World Mental Health Day, and honestly, I needed it.
I've been carrying a lot lately. Running Don't Forget My Pet, working, gearing up for our Gala, and Digga's health is always a worry sitting in the back of my mind. Somewhere along the way I stopped showing up for me. So I switched off, walked Digga and Nelly, and let myself just be.
Digga is a big part of why Don't Forget My Pet exists. During lockdown, he was my lifeline. He got me up, got me outside, and made me laugh when nothing else could. I know firsthand how much a pet can hold someone together, and I never want anyone to lose that when they need it most.
The world feels really scary right now. As a woman, I grew up knowing how to protect myself. No one ever taught me. I just knew. Keys between my fingers. Spray deodorant in my bag. Most women reading this will know exactly what I mean, and that says everything. It's scary for anyone who's vulnerable, or different, or doesn't fit someone else's idea of "normal". Rights are being chipped away, and the people with the least power keep paying the highest price.
I see people every week who are hanging on, and their pet is the reason they get up in the morning. I see people grieving a pet they've lost, and being told to just get over it. We've stopped looking out for each other, and it's costing people. So talk to your neighbour. Check on the person who's gone quiet. It matters more than you think.
