The trick to growing African Violets.

Over thirty years of growing plants, I’ve watched folks tie themselves in knots over African violets. Buying expensive self-watering pots, worrying over humidity, and panicking when the blooms stubbornly stop. Truth is, these fuzzy little characters just want to grow. But if yours is refusing to flower, the fix usually involves doing something that feels entirely wrong. To get them blooming again, I actually recommend stripping away perfectly healthy parts of the plant. There is a very specific 'magic number' of leaves you want to leave behind. Once you do that—and use a surprisingly trendy bathroom item to solve their biggest hidden problem—they usually sort themselves out in a few weeks. Stop worrying about doing it perfectly. Just give them what they need, get out of the way, and let them do their thing. I've put together the exact leaf count you need to hit, plus a few other quiet tricks I've learned for keeping them covered in blooms.

Established in 1993 and opened to the public in 1996, AALBG in Port Augusta has spent three decades proving that Australia's arid heart is anything but barren. Home to thousands of highly evolved plant communities, this 250+ hectare garden on the shores of Upper Spencer Gulf showcases the incredible resilience of arid zone flora against the backdrop of the ancient Flinders Ranges.
