Our open garden at Nillumbik Cottage is going to be a special event. It’s the garden of one of OGV’s own Garden Selectors, who has lovingly shaped this charming miner’s cottage garden over 25 years. Set in the leafy surrounds of Research, you’ll find meandering paths, vibrant plantings, reclaimed garden features and the owner's distinctive glass sculptures which create a peaceful retreat.

Need plants, yet are limited with cash, or just desire quality plants that have been hand grown by dedicated volunteers. The Melton Botanic Garden Plant Nursery is for you.
Located at 21 Williams St, Melton, Vic and run by the Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden, they sell dry-climate and native plants suited to local conditions.
The nursery opens Tuesdays and Thursdays: 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM
2nd and 4th Sundays:
9:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Note: The nursery may close during bad weather or if there are not enough volunteers. It also closes for about six weeks over the Christmas and New Year school holidays.

Interesting Snake Plant facts...

Over thirty years of growing, I’ve watched a lot of folks accidentally kill their snake plants with kindness. Big roomy pots, strict weekly watering routines, endless fussing. But these tough old birds are remarkably contrary. If you actually trick a snake plant into thinking its comfortable indoor life is coming to a sudden end, it does something entirely unexpected. A little botanical survival mechanism kicks in, and it produces something most houseplant owners will go their whole lives without ever seeing. I figured this out years ago when I finally stopped trying to make mine "happy." I left it cramped in a small pot, held back the water, and then... well. It completely changes how you look at the plant. There are a few other oddities about them most folks don't know, including the real story behind that famous NASA 'air purifying' study everyone likes to bring up. I've put down what actually happens when you push them to the brink, and why you should probably ignore yours a whole lot more. I dropped the link to the full story in the comments. Go have a look.

Wattle you be doing 1 September ?! Join us at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne for a series FREE National Wattle Day walks! 🚶

Immerse yourself in the beauty of Australia’s iconic flower and explore a diverse collection of wattles from every state—some rare and unusual—which will captivate your senses.

As it’s still National Science Week, we also have to shoutout the incredible research that has gone into understanding our national floral emblem…

In 2022, scientists at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria sequenced the genome of the golden wattle (𝘈𝘤𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘺𝘤𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘢), for the first time. Put simply, this means our team, alongside contributors from around the country, worked to understand the building blocks that make the golden wattle, well…a golden wattle!

It’s DNA was sequenced into millions of fragments, then assembled like a giant jigsaw puzzle using high-performance computing housed in the National Herbarium of Victoria.

The golden wattle genome was found to be made of 814 million DNA bases (the ‘letters’ that make up DNA) and included nearly 48,000 genes. In comparison, humans have larger genomes with 3.1 billion bases of DNA but fewer (~20,000) genes.
