This World Environment Day, we're celebrating children and communities taking action to adapt to a changing climate and build a more resilient future.

Here are three creative ways children in Vanuatu are making a difference.

🌱 At 18, Maiten is part of Dausake Youth, a group of 20 young people committed to creating positive change in their community. With support from Save the Children, they designed and built a waste management system that encourages recycling and helps keep their local area clean.

🥕 7 year old Daniela and her family are involved in a food preservation project that helps communities prepare for extreme weather. Vegetables grown in a shared garden are dried on solar racks, sealed, and stored, ensuring families have access to nutritious food supplies when cyclones strike.

🌿 Madleen, 11, and her family take part in a seed bank project, where families can access climate-resilient seeds to grow in their gardens and nurseries.

From managing waste to protecting food supplies and growing climate-resilient crops, children are leading the way – helping their communities adapt, prepare and thrive in the face of climate change.

Come meet Alice and her team as they travel through rough terrain to bring medical supplies and therapeutic peanut paste to remote communities in Kenya.

Please donate before 30 June to help bring more of these lifesaving treatments to children in need https://bit.ly/4uJXsIn

On Mabo Day, we honour the strength and legacy of Eddie Mabo - a Torres Strait Islander man who changed the course of Australian history.

Eddie Mabo led a ten-year legal battle challenging the colonial idea of terra nullius - the false claim that Australia was ‘nobody’s land’. In 1992, the High Court of Australia recognised what First Nations peoples had always known: this land was never empty.

The decision led to the Native Title Act 1993, creating a legal framework to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' enduring connection to their traditional lands - lands they have cared for over tens of thousands of years.

Connection to Country is central to the identity, culture and wellbeing of First Nations children. By recognising land rights, we help protect the foundations that allow children, families and communities to thrive. We are proud to stand alongside First Nations peoples and to support work led by their voices, stories and self-determination.

On this day in 1967, more than 90% of Australians voted “Yes” to change the Constitution.

This historic referendum meant that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples would be counted as part of the population and acknowledged as equal citizens - a landmark victory won through years of campaigning by First Nations leaders, communities and allies.

During National Reconciliation Week, we remember this moment as an important step forward towards justice, recognition and equality, but not the end of the journey. Reconciliation calls on all of us to keep listening, learning and acting to support truth, justice and self-determination for First Nations peoples.

On National Sorry Day, we stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise the mistreatment, injustice and trauma experienced by the Stolen Generations forcibly removed from their families and communities.

Reconciliation is a shared journey that calls for ongoing commitment to meaningful change. We are deeply grateful for the invitation extended to us in the Uluru Statement from the Heart to walk together with First Nations Australians on the path towards justice, truth and treaty.

At Save the Children Australia and 54 reasons, we are on our own truth-telling journey as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan. This work is central to our commitment to practicing allyship with First Nations children, families and communities, and critical to strengthening our cultural safety as an organisation.

We wholeheartedly believe that a reconciled Australia will be a better country - one that fully includes the richness and wisdom of the oldest continuous cultures on Earth.

Children in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo are facing a deadly crisis.

A rapidly escalating Ebola outbreak has already claimed more than 130 lives, including at least seven children, with infections continuing to rise in communities already devastated by conflict and displacement.

For children, the danger goes far beyond the virus itself.

Outbreaks like this can mean losing access to healthcare, being separated from family, missing school, and facing an increased risk of violence.

Save the Children teams are already responding in DRC and Uganda, working alongside local partners and health authorities to help stop the spread and protect children by:

• Providing protective equipment and lifesaving health support

• Delivering hygiene kits and trusted health information

• Supporting children with psychosocial care and family tracing

• Helping keep children safe, learning and connected to essential services

You can help support our teams by donating to Save the Children’s Emergency Fund today.

Big news for climate justice 🌏✊

141 countries have backed a landmark UN resolution supporting the International Court of Justice’s opinion that governments have a legal obligation to act on climate change.

The world’s highest court also recognised that climate change is harming children’s rights, including their rights to health, education and safety.

Save the Children NextGen Youth Ambassador Vepaia welcomed the decision, calling it “history that means a protected planet for youth like me across the world.”

This major win follows years of advocacy led by Pacific young people and communities calling for urgent action to protect children’s futures. 💚

Turning skills into impact

Paul, a volunteer in our Melbourne Op Shop, recently found a new way to extend his contribution beyond his weekly shift.

“I realised while I was helping out at [the] op shop that I could do more, so I started reaching out to my network of businesses, brands and manufacturers to encourage donations.” - Paul, Volunteer

While still in the early stages, these contributions are already adding value across our Victorian store network, providing vital funds to make sure that every child has the right to a bright future.
