This is Australia’s smallest Kingfisher - appropriately called a Little Kingfisher - it’s about 11cms in size - and I was so lucky to find one in the mangrove walk near Cairns Airport in Jan 2025. Unfortunately forgot to wear mozzie repellant ! If you go there - cover yourself up !! 😝🕊️

Bumped into a Covey of Brown Quail along the path past the Laverton Creek footbridge - there was at least 7 but only one or two stood still long enough for a photo.

BirdLife Australia: Today is International Owl Awareness Day – a day to celebrate these incredible raptors and shine a light on the threats they face. 🦉

This year, we reached one of the biggest wins for Australian wildlife in decades. After years of campaigning and the collective action of our community, wildlife-killing rat poisons are finally coming off retail shelves.

But we’re not at the finish line just yet.

The final decision now rests with Minister Collins and Assistant Minister Chisholm. Their sign-off will make this landmark protection official.

This International Owl Awareness Day, you can help get us over the finish line by signing our email tool urging the Ministers to make this decision official 👇.

Together, we can make this historic win permanent for owls and other native wildlife.

They maybe called Lichmera indistinca per their binominal but their talent at collecting insects without getting hooked or cut by barbed wire means honeyeaters like this have quite distinctive talents! Not sure if they realise how dexterous and precise they are …and who woulda thunk that barbed wire, which had been known to do much damage to wildlife, could@also be a source of food! Ps: the background was a dark concrete wall and I reduced the exposure so it was pure black …turned out ok I reckon ? 🕊️
