The scam compounds making headlines across Southeast Asia don’t just affect people overseas. North Americans have been recruited into these operations through fake job ads, and are targeted daily by the scams these victims are forced to run.

The fraud calls, the romance scams, the crypto schemes flooding our phones...many originate from people who are themselves trapped.

The uncomfortable truth is that the person on the other end of a scam call may be a victim of trafficking themselves, held under threat, stripped of their documents, and forced to work.

Chenda’s graduation is just the beginning of life she is building for herself.

After surviving exploitation and abuse, Chenda received care and support from Hagar, including a university scholarship.

She chose law so she can help other girls like herself.

The knowledge she earned, the resilience she carried through it, she now takes into her community to help others.

This is the kind of impact that multiplies. Chenda will pass on hope and hold open doors for other girls like her.

You’ve scrolled past ads like this before. “Reply to messages”, “earn quick money”, “no experience needed”.

For Grace, at 17, it looked harmless. It wasn’t.

She was trafficked across the border into a scam compound — forced to con strangers online, threatened when she resisted.

This is what trafficking looks like now. Not a van in a parking lot. A job post in your feed, or your kid’s.

Grace made it home because her parents never stopped looking — and because someone was ready to provide care the moment she needed it.

From the street, it looked like every other karaoke bar in Thailand. But behind the neon signs and closed door, four teenage girls were being sold.

That child trafficking network has now been disrupted through a crucial joint operation with Hagar’s team in Thailand LIFT International, the Central Investigation Bureau, and the International Protection Alliance.

While law enforcemeent secured the arrest, our team was there for what happens next — making sure the four girls were safely removed from harm, and supported every step of the way.

The offender has confessed and each of the girls is now receiving professional care that healing requires.

Restoration and justice go hand in hand. It’s the quiet, steady work of showing a survivor the world can be safe again. It’s seeing stolen dignity restored.

That’s why we’re so proud of our local team for recently leading two public outreach events for parents, teachers, and community leaders.

This question feels difficult to answer, because it is. Healing from trafficking and abuse is not one size fits all. So how do our global teams approach it?

Hagar Vietnam sat down with the team in Thailand last month to discuss Knowledge about Trauma, and join with other professionals who are asking this very question in their daily work.

They didn’t come with lectures. They came with questions. What have you learned that we haven’t? What do you wish someone had told you when you started this work? How has this shaped you as a professional? And in return, everyone shared their own hard-won lessons from the field.
