Today, we commemorate the Great Siege of Malta of AD 1565.
Just over three months earlier, a mighty Turkish armada set sail for Malta with a singular goal: to destroy the Order of St. John and seize the island as a strategic base from which to launch an invasion of Italy and ultimately eradicate Christianity in Europe.

Awaiting them were approximately 500 Knights of the Order, supported by Spanish and Italian mercenaries, and above all, the courageous Maltese people. This was not the first confrontation between these two powers—the last encounter had taken place on the island of Rhodes, which had been lost by the Order years earlier.

Yet, against overwhelming odds, the defenders of Malta emerged victorious.
Let us never forget the bravery and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for freedom, faith, and the future of Europe.

The temporary chimney atop the Sistine Chapel released a plume of white smoke on Thursday evening local time, signaling that the 133 cardinals working inside had reached a two-thirds majority to elect a new pope for the Catholic Church.

American Cardinal Robert Prevost was shortly thereafter announced as the 267th pontiff. He chose the name Leo XIV, a senior cardinal deacon announced.

The 69-year-old Chicago native is the first American pope and is seen as a diplomat in the church.

"This is the first greeting of the risen Christ. May the peace be with you," Leo said in Italian in his first remarks as pope. "This is the peace of the risen Christ."
