HISTORY MADE ! πŸ‡±πŸ‡°πŸ’™πŸ€πŸ’›

Rumesh Tharanga has just ended a 20-year Commonwealth gold medal drought for Sri Lanka.

With an absolute rocket of 89.75 meters in the men’s javelin final early this morning, he secured our first gold of the 2026 Games.

The magnitude of this achievement cannot be overstated:

πŸ₯‡ First CWG gold for Sri Lanka since Chinthana Geethal Vidanage in 2006.
πŸ₯‡ First-ever CWG gold for Sri Lanka in the javelin throw.
πŸ₯‡ First CWG gold for Sri Lanka in an athletics event in 76 years.
πŸ₯‡ Sri Lanka's 5th Commonwealth gold medal overall.

One Golden Throw, Millions of Proud Hearts. A Peterite Shines for Sri Lanka.

πŸ©ΊπŸ’™πŸ€πŸ’› Did you know that one of Sri Lanka’s greatest surgeons was a Peterite?

A proud Peterite, Dr. P.R. Anthonis (1911–2010) began his remarkable journey at St. Peter's College (then St. Joseph's South), where he excelled academically before entering Colombo Medical College in 1930.

πŸŽ“ He graduated at the top of his class, winning the prestigious Loos, Mathew, and Rockwood Gold Medals, and later became the youngest Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons after passing both examinations in Britain at his first attempt.

πŸ₯ Returning to Ceylon in 1947, Dr. Anthonis devoted his life to surgery, performing nearly 100,000 operations over an extraordinary 70-year career. He also operated on Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike after the 1959 assassination attempt.

πŸ“š Beyond medicine, he was:
πŸ”Ή Founder President of the Ceylon College of Surgeons
πŸ”Ή Chancellor of the University of Colombo (1981–2003)
πŸ”Ή A respected historian and scholar
πŸ”Ή A devoted Buddhist and YMBA Governor
πŸ… Honoured with the title Deshamanya for his outstanding service to Sri Lanka, Dr. Anthonis remained professionally active until his passing in 2010 at the age of 99, making him one of South Asia's oldest practising doctors.

πŸ™ A true Peterite legend whose life of excellence, humility, and service continues to inspire generations.

Forever a proud son of St. Peter's College.

The SPC OBSC Melbourne warmly wishes our former President Rohan Samaranayake a very Happy Birthday and continued good health, happiness and success.

Rohan served on the Committee from 1986 and as President from 2009 to 2011, having the distinction of serving in every Committee position except Secretary.

He was one of the Presidents who guided our Club through its third decade. During this period, the Club continued to grow in stature, with a focused effort to broaden our membership and attract the younger generation of Peterites.

That vision came to fruition in 2015 with the election of Chanaka Perera, our youngest ever President, at the age of 30.

Thank you, Rohan, for your dedicated service and lasting contribution to the Peterite community in Melbourne.

Catching up with Bernard after many years brought back to me what a funny guy he is.(Bernard and I were neighbours in Pepiliyana, Colombo in the 1970’s & 80’s)

🏏 BERNARD WIJETUNGE
Bernard Wijetunge is a distinguished Peterite whose achievements in sport, business and tourism have brought great credit to his alma mater.

Coming in at number three to bat and an all-rounder, he captained St. Peter’s College in 1975, leading the team to victory in the inaugural Battle of the Saints limited-overs match against St. Joseph’s College, the first traditional schools one-day cricket encounter in Sri Lanka.
Cricketing excellence spans three generations of the Wijetunge family, with Bernard following his father and later his son, Sheehan, in proudly representing St. Peter’s College in cricket.

(Bernard is pictured holding the ball used in the inaugural limited-overs match.)

Your Editor Tino De La Motte Catches Up with Peterite Rugby Legends in Colombo. πŸ’™πŸ‡±πŸ‡°πŸ’›

Meeting these great guys after 25 years was such an emotional experience. It was like the years melted away and we were back in class together. (Roshan Deen and Michael Jayasekera were my classmates up to GCE β€œO” Level)

πŸ‰ ROSHAN DEEN

Roshan Deen is a distinguished Peterite rugby player whose outstanding contribution to Sri Lankan rugby spans playing, refereeing and administration.

After representing Havelock Sports Club as a player, he became one of the country’s leading rugby referees before moving into administration. He later served as President of Havelock Sports Club, President of the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU), and as a Council Member of Sri Lanka Rugby, making a lasting contribution to the development of the game.

πŸ‰ MICHAEL JAYASEKERA

Michael Jayasekera is one of Sri Lanka’s most distinguished rugby personalities, excelling as a player, administrator and corporate leader.

A Peterite by birth, he began his rugby career at St. Peter’s College before continuing at St Thomas College, Mount Lavinia, where he starred in rugby, cricket and athletics. He later represented Havelock Sports Club and Sri Lanka, earning recognition as one of the country’s finest three-quarters.

After retiring, Michael made a significant contribution to rugby administration, serving as Chairman of Selectors and Vice President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union.

Happy Birthday to our current Melbourne OBSC Vice President, Dilan Abeygoonewardena! πŸŽ‰

Today we celebrate a proud Peterite whose leadership, humility and unwavering commitment continue to strengthen our Melbourne Peterite family.

Dilan’s leadership journey began at St Peter’s College, where he proudly represented Peterite Rugby from the Under 13s through to the 1st XV, earning the honour of captaining the College Rugby Team in 2001. Along the way, he represented the College on the international stage at the Junior Asiad and the Junior Rugby World Cup in Chile.
