🎙️ Peterite Legends - THE PETERITE LEGACY SERIES | 01

We are proud to launch Peterite Legends,The Peterite Legacy Series, celebrating remarkable Old Boys of St. Peter’s College whose achievements, talents and contributions have left an enduring mark on Sri Lankan history and beyond.

A brilliant scholar, he joined St. Peter’s College in 1941 and laying the foundation for a remarkable life that would eventually make his voice part of Sri Lankan history.

Some voices are heard. Some voices become part of history.

⭐ LEGENDARY JIMMY BHARUCHA
“The Voice of Radio Ceylon”

A pioneer of broadcasting, Jimmy Bharucha joined Radio Ceylon on 17 September 1951 and went on to become one of the most recognisable voices of his era.

From iconic programmes such as Crookes Hit Parade, Film Magazine, Take It or Leave It, Melodies and Memories, to senior leadership roles at Radio Ceylon, his distinctive voice reached millions across Sri Lanka and beyond.

His journey is more than a broadcasting story, it is a Peterite story of excellence, dedication and lasting influence.

💡🕰️ The “Peterines” - The three girls who attended College in the 1960’s

Girls attending a boys’ school was virtually unheard of in the 1960s. Yet, in 1966, three pioneering girls from HFC Bambalapitiya made history at St Peter’s College!

Frances Nicholas, Jean Ekanayake and Lilani Fernando walked through the gates with determination to study Mathematics at “A” Level .

Under the watchful care of boarding mistress Miss Lizzie Ekanayake, Jean, Frances and Lilani used to have lunch at the boarding and spent intervals in the staff room.
Jean fondly recalls playing the grand piano in the College Hall , while also remembering the stones some boys threw at them as they walked to lunch.Thankfully, prefect Chandu Jethenand stepped in to es**rt them, and the stone-throwing soon stopped.

Lilani remembers the powerful singing of the College Anthem at Monday assemblies and the lasting influence of Fr Joe Wickremasinghe’s catechism classes, which taught her to respect human frailty.

Frances later married Anslem Perera, making them the one and only Peterite couple.
Lilani, the only one in the Sinhala stream, went on to enter university and graduated from Peradeniya as an engineer.

But perhaps their greatest achievement was inspiring HFC to introduce the Mathematics stream from the following year.
The Peterines were true pioneers - breaking barriers and opening doors for generations to come.

📸💡A few highlights from our inaugural Quiz for a Cause was a wonderful celebration of teamwork, unity and our shared commitment to giving back.

Seven Sri Lankan school communities came together to organise this special event, with St. Anthony’s College Kandy, St. Benedict’s College Colombo, St. Bridget’s Convent Colombo, Good Shepherd Convent Colombo, Holy Family Convent Colombo, St. Joseph’s College Colombo and St. Peter’s College Colombo joining hands to raise funds for Caritas and strengthen the bonds between our school communities.

We are delighted to share that the evening raised more than $5,000 for Caritas, a wonderful outcome made possible through the generosity and collective efforts of everyone involved.❤️

The evening was filled with friendly competition, laughter and great team spirit. We were also delighted to welcome teams from Bishop’s College, Methodist College and Royal College, who joined us on the night and added even more energy and camaraderie to this first-ever collaboration.

🏆A Fantastic Result for the Peterites!

The Peterites & Friends were proudly represented by three of the 18 tables.

A special congratulations to the table led by our Past President Gavin Godlieb, which emerged as the overall winner, finishing 1st.🥇

Adding to the fantastic result, the table led by our Treasurer finished an impressive 4th. A brilliant effort from both teams, congratulations!👏

Our sincere thanks and congratulations to all the organising teams for their dedication, teamwork and seamless coordination in bringing this inaugural event together and making it such a wonderful success.

A special thank you also to Quiz Master Ruwan Senanayake and his team, whose expertise, enthusiasm and challenging questions made the evening both engaging and thoroughly enjoyable.

Seven schools. One community. One cause. Together, we made a difference. 🤝

The SPC OBSC Melbourne warmly wishes our former President Jerome Chandrasekera a very Happy Birthday and continued good health, happiness and success.

Jerome joined the Committee in 2009, shortly after arriving in Australia, and went on to serve as President during the historic Centenary Year in 2022.

As President during this significant milestone, Jerome had the distinction of leading the Club as Melbourne Peterites celebrated 100 years of our beloved Alma Mater. The Centenary Year was marked by a number of memorable occasions, including ‘Cocktails on the Pier’and the spectacular Centenary Ball, creating lasting memories for the Peterite community.

A passionate cricketer, Jerome has also been an active member of the Peterite Choral, contributing to the wider Peterite community in many ways over the years.

Thank you, Jerome, for your dedicated service and valued contribution to the Peterite community in Melbourne.

It is with deep sadness that SPC OBSC Melbourne announces the passing of Mrs. Winifred Phyllis Lusian Rodrigo, beloved mother of Rev. Fr. Rohitha Rodrigo, Rector of St. Peter’s College, Colombo 04, who was called to eternal rest on 31 August 2026.

On behalf of the SPC OBSC Melbourne community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Rev. Fr. Rohitha Rodrigo and his family during this time of profound loss.

44th AGM 2026 | A Night of Fellowship, Unity & Looking Ahead 💙🤍💛

A wonderful evening of fellowship, reflection and togetherness as we celebrated the journey of SPC OBSC Melbourne and looked towards a new chapter for our community.

A New Chapter Begins
A new chapter in the history of our club begins with the election of Dilan Abeygoonewardena as President. One of the youngest Peterites to be elected to this position, Dilan outlined his vision for the future, including his aspiration for the Melbourne Peterite OBSC to have its own clubhouse,something the club has not had for almost 30 years.

We warmly welcome Dilshan Iddamalgoda, Rasika Jayathilaka, Shehan Raffle and Richard Jayawardena as new members of the Committee.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Former President Ajith Perera and departing Vice President Niroshan de Cruze for their many years of dedicated service. Their contribution to building the club into what it is today will always be remembered with great respect and appreciation.

Continuing Leadership
Prasad Algama continues as Vice Patron, with Former President Ajith Perera joining him in this role. Nicholas Opatha continues as Honorary Auditor.

Honorary Life Membership
In recognition of their outstanding contribution and service to the Melbourne Peterite community over many years, Hamish Paternott and Rienzie Machado were awarded Honorary Life Membership.

It was particularly heartening to see such strong member engagement at the AGM, especially from our younger Peterites.

As we welcome this new leadership and look towards the future, we look forward with optimism and enthusiasm to a new chapter in the history of the
SPC OBSC Melbourne.

Together, we move forward united, committed and stronger. ✨

🕊️ Vale Rex Ludowyke

FUNERAL DETAILS ADDED:

Service to celebrate Rex’s life will be held at Holy Saviour Catholic Church ,765 Highbury Road ,Vermont South at 10.30 am on 1st September 2026.

It is with great sadness that we inform our Peterite community of the passing of Rex Ludowyke, one of our senior and highly respected Melbourne OBSC members.

Rex first attended St. Peter’s College during the Second World War in the 1940s, when the College was temporarily located next to St. Mary’s College, Dehiwala.

A cricket enthusiast throughout his life, Rex began his cricketing career as a Junior Under-14 player under the guidance of Cyril Ekanayake, before progressing to the Under-16 team under Herbert Wittahatchy.

He later represented the First XI under Harold Wittahatchy, taking over the wicket-keeping position from Dr. H.I.K. Fernando, our oldest living cricket captain. During his First XI career, Rex also played alongside the legendary Clive Inman.

Rex was a proud Peterite and a much-loved member of our Melbourne Peterite community. His lifelong passion for cricket and his deep connection with St. Peter’s College will be fondly remembered.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Barbara and the entire Ludewyke family at this very sad time.

May his soul Rest in Peace. 🙏🕯️
