It all kicks off tomorrow!

Strong regulatory systems need to keep adapting as the environment around them changes.

How we embrace innovation, lead change and continue delivering strong regulatory outcomes will be at the centre of the AELERT 2026 Conference: Future Ready Regulation.

Our partner AELERT is bringing the regulatory community together for three days of practical learning, shared experience and discussion about the challenges regulators are navigating now.

For us, it’s also an opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, hear different perspectives from across jurisdictions and build relationships across the regulatory community.

We’re looking forward to the conversations and hope to catch up with you in Melbourne.

How are other regulators responding to the changes affecting regulatory practice right now?

That’s one of the conversations we’re looking forward to at the AELERT 2026 Conference: Future Ready Regulation, hosted by our partner AELERT.

With a theme of embracing innovation, leading change and strengthening regulatory systems, the conference will bring together regulators from across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific to share practical experience and learn from different approaches.

It’s a chance to step outside your own agency, see what others are trying and take practical ideas and new connections back to your team.

We’re looking forward to joining colleagues from across the regulatory community in Melbourne and hope to see you there.

What does it take to be ready for the next era of regulation?

AI and emerging technologies are changing regulated industries and regulatory tools. Reform is reshaping responsibilities. Public expectations continue to rise.

Our partner AELERT is bringing the regulatory community together to explore these challenges at the AELERT 2026 Conference: Future Ready Regulation.

This year’s theme focuses on embracing innovation, leading change, and strengthening regulatory systems, with practical insights and shared experience from across the regulatory community.

It’s a valuable opportunity to learn how other regulators are responding, compare approaches across jurisdictions and take new ideas back to your agency.

We’re looking forward to being part of the conversation and hope to catch up with many of you there.

That's a wrap on the EIANZ 2026 Impact Assessment Symposium in Canberra: two days on what Australia's new national environmental laws mean in practice for assessment, approvals and compliance, and how the profession turns reform into results.

Where two days landed:

- A broadly positive mood about the direction of the EPBC reforms, and the opportunity they create to improve impact assessment practice rather than simply add another layer of compliance.
- Real goodwill and appetite within the profession to make the reforms work and use them to deliver better environmental outcomes. That goodwill is an asset as implementation moves from policy into practice.
- The next generation is hopeful, but alert to disruption. Young practitioners closing out the Symposium were optimistic about careers in impact assessment and clear-eyed about - AI-related job displacement. Fieldwork and place-based experience came through as a source of enduring professional value, not something that gives way to desk-based automation.
- Strategic impact assessment needs greater prominence. There was a strong case for using strategic assessment to frame cumulative impacts before individual projects are assessed: clearer guidance on cumulative impact assessment, and a strategic context that identifies environmental thresholds or critical limits, rather than expecting individual projects to resolve those questions.

Thank you to every speaker, facilitator and delegate who made the Symposium what it was, and to the technical committee who shaped two days of practical, frank discussion.

Thanks also to our sponsors for their support: Umwelt (Gold), Beca (Lanyard) and Symbolix (Bronze).

That's a wrap on Day 1 of the EIANZ 2026 Impact Assessment Symposium in Canberra, where industry, consultants, government and the legal profession worked through what Australia's new national environmental laws mean in practice for assessment, approvals and compliance.

What stood out:

- Optimism from all sides that the new laws will lift compliance and enforcement.
- Terms such as "seriously impair", "serious damage" and "irreplaceable" will inevitably be tested in the courts, so expect a period of settling before their meaning is clear in practice.
- The concept of "repair" has no direct equivalent at state level. Working out how it sits with existing state regimes will take some effort.
- The real test of First Nations involvement in EIA is integration of Traditional Knowledge, not engagement. What changed because First Nations people were involved? If the answer is "nothing", the process has not worked.
- One practical idea: an "on-country" chapter in the EIS that brings Traditional Knowledge together alongside the ecology, Aboriginal heritage and social impact chapters.
- The Bribie Island emergency works featured in several presentations, from shorebird impacts to the delivery and governance model, as a live case study in adaptive management.
- Iterative scoping in social impact assessment, updating what is assessed as understanding of the community grows, sharpens materiality and reduces noise.
- Knowledge gaps get filled by misinformation. Transparency and closing those gaps early are part of the job.

Day 2 continues tomorrow.
