Leadership rooted in culture doesn’t just change communities. It changes systems.

Over 22 years, the Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership (FIL) has supported more than 40 First Nations leaders across Victoria, with influence spanning health, justice, education, sport, culture, Treaty and more.

📌 Rueben Berg and Ngarra Murray, Co-Chairs of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, leading Treaty negotiations.

📌 Belinda Duarte AM, CEO of Culture is Life, is transforming su***de prevention through cultural strength.

📌 Dr Paul Briggs AO established institutions like Rumbalara Football Netball Club and Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence, embedding Yorta Yorta values in local systems.

📌 Karen Milward AM has reshaped how governments engage with community, delivering cultural safety and economic empowerment.

📌 Shantelle Thompson OAM empowers young women through Kiilalaana, a trauma-informed, self-leadership program.
These leaders are respected across sectors and borders, nationally and internationally. They show us what’s possible when we invest in people.

📖 The Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership: Grounded in Culture, Guided by Purpose captures this impact and shares the lessons that others, especially in philanthropy, government and community, can learn from.

Big change often starts with a simple idea and deep trust.

The Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership began over 22 years ago with a powerful, unconventional decision: to back a person, not a project.

Dr Paul Briggs AO, a Yorta Yorta man working tirelessly for community, was supported not with a grant for outputs, but with a living wage, space to lead, and belief in his vision. This became the foundation for a leadership model rooted in trust, relationships and self-determination.

📖 The story of how it all started is a reminder that when we listen, back bold ideas, and invest in people (not processes) we can create lasting impact and is essential reading for funders, policymakers and changemakers looking for better ways to support First Nations leadership and long-term impact.
