We continue to sit idly by as more and more legislation is passed that attempts to criminalise either conduct that is already criminal, or conduct that doesnt reach that bar, and conduct that is vague, requires little to no evidence to support, and is essentially the "believe all allegations" doctrine.

Today marks a significant step toward addressing family, domestic, and sexual violence in the ACT.

Coercive control is a form of violence that can include physical and non-physical abuse, including financial and psychological harm, used to control, punish or frighten another person. It is not currently a standalone offence in the ACT, yet it is inextricably linked to domestic and family violence.

We have consistently advocated for stronger recognition of coercive control and has contributed to consultation for some years. We were members of the advisory group informing this legislation.

Criminalisation alone is not the solution; the effectiveness of this reform will depend on implementation.

Ongoing investment in specialist training and education for police, courts and frontline services is essential to ensure coercive control is recognised, understood and responded to effectively.

We are grateful to the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Dr Marisa Paterson MLA, honouring her commitment to introduce legislation to criminalise coercive control by mid-2026.

What do you all make of this?

Do lawyers, parliamentarians and executives simply close their eyes and pretend that habeas corpus never existed? That producing the commensurate level of evidence required to justify removing property and children from an alleged person?

Special powers given to police to protect domestic violence victims from their abusers are so restrictive they cannot be used in the majority of incidents.

Then demands a parenting app — which she controls, creating an asymmetric surveillance architecture.
Blocking a parent on all communication channels is fundamentally inconsistent with s60B FLA. It is a unilateral communication embargo.
