Today is Rare Disease Day đź’™

Let’s talk about the reality behind the word rare.

Rare diseases are often invisible, underfunded and misunderstood, but the people living with them are not rare.

Today, we stand with the global rare disease community and continue our commitment to research, prevention and support for neurological rare diseases.

Awareness matters, action matters and most importantly, people matter.

In neuroscience, not all genes directly cause disease.

Some are at-risk genes, known as vulnerability genes 🧬

They don’t guarantee illness, but they can increase sensitivity in the nervous system.

These genes influence how the brain and body respond to things like stress, infection, inflammation and environmental factors. This is especially important in rare neurological diseases, where outcomes are rarely explained by a single gene or a single moment.
It’s why two people can share similar genetics and experience very different paths.

Understanding vulnerability genes shifts the conversation from fear to understanding.
From inevitability to possibility.

From “what’s wrong with me?” to “what support is available?”

Because knowledge leads to better research, earlier intervention and better care.

Two weeks until Rare Disease Day đź’™

We’re sharing what matters to us: Visibility, understanding and support.

We stand with the rare disease community and those living with neurological rare conditions every day, not just on one date.

Rare, but not alone.

Behind every research breakthrough is a scientist dedicated to finding answers.

At The Homer Hack, we are proud to support these changemakers through the funds raised by our community. One of them is Dr. Agustin Cota-Coronado, whose work in stem cell research is opening new doors for people living with rare neurological conditions.

This year, Dr. Cota-Coronado was recognised on the world stage at the premier global forum for stem cell research, 2025 Annual Meeting in Hong Kong, where he received both a Travel Award and the prestigious ISSCR Zhongmei Chen Yong Award for Scientific Excellence.

We asked some questions about his research, the impact of The Homer Hack’s funding and what these breakthroughs could mean for families searching for hope.

🔬Every major medical breakthrough started the same way: as a small, early-stage study.

When it comes to neurological conditions, early research is often underfunded, yet it’s here that the biggest leaps can begin.

From identifying potential biomarkers that may allow earlier diagnosis, to exploring treatment pathways that could change how conditions are managed, every discovery starts at the ground level.

That’s why your support matters.

By funding research today, we’re planting seeds for tomorrow’s breakthroughs.
