Today, as we gather to honour the Anzacs, we also pause to remember the animals who served alongside them. Their contribution is woven quietly through our history, yet it remains deeply significant to all of us. These animals didn’t understand the cause or the conflict, but they showed a kind of courage and loyalty that supported our troops in ways words can barely capture.
Horses carried soldiers and supplies across harsh landscapes; donkeys, like the one remembered from Gallipoli, brought the wounded to safety with steady, gentle steps; dogs offered companionship and protection in moments of fear and isolation; and pigeons flew through danger to deliver messages that saved lives.
As a community, we recognise that these animals carried more than equipment - they carried trust, hope, and the emotional weight of the people who depended on them. Their service helped shape the stories we honour today.
Remembering them is not separate from remembering our soldiers; it is part of the same story of endurance, sacrifice, and the bonds formed in hardship. On this Anzac Day, we acknowledge their place in our shared history and offer our gratitude for the quiet bravery they gave without question.
