What an afternoon! Last Friday, FLPA brought early career practitioners together at the Pullman Brisbane King George Square for the 2026 Early Career CPD Afternoon. 💫

Tony Graham (Australian Workplace Drug Testing Services) tackled drug testing in family law, and Damon Hatchett (HopgoodGanim) walked through what junior practitioners need to know for Court prep and appearances.

The day wrapped with drinks and networking at the FLPA Social Mixer, Sixteen Antlers.

What an afternoon! Last Friday, FLPA welcomed early career practitioners to the Pullman Brisbane King George Square for the 2026 Early Career CPD Afternoon, practical, real-world learning that's exactly what we set out to deliver. 💫

Tony Graham, Managing Director at Australian Workplace Drug Testing Services, kicked things off with "Positive, Negative… Now What? A Practical Guide to Drug Testing in Family Law." Damon Hatchett, Partner at HopgoodGanim, followed with "Ready for Court: A Practical Guide for Early Career Practitioners," covering the issues junior practitioners most often face preparing for and appearing in Court.

The afternoon rolled into the FLPA Social Mixer at Sixteen Antlers, where the wider profession joined us for drinks, canapés and networking.

What a weekend. The 2026 FLPA Retreat on the Gold Coast brought together our Queensland family law community for two days of genuine learning, meaningful connection, and for many members, their very first FLPA retreat.

There is something special about stepping away from the office and into a space where the people around you understand exactly what this work asks of you. The conversations that happen over a meal or between sessions often matter just as much as the sessions themselves, and this year was no exception.

To every member who joined us: thank you for showing up, for sharing your experience, and for being part of what makes this community worth building.

Another FLPA Retreat is behind us, and we're still feeling it.

Over the past few days, Queensland's family law community came together in the way it does best sharing knowledge, swapping stories, and reminding each other why this work matters.

The rooms were full. The conversations were rich. And somewhere between the CPD sessions and the dinner table, something that's hard to put into words happened: people reconnected with their community, and with the deeper sense of purpose that brings us all to this profession.

None of it happens without the people who make it what it is.

NEW FLPA TALKS EPISODE: 💚 🎙️ Navigating the Early Years of Family Law: Junior Questions. Senior Answers.

In this episode of FLPA Talks, Amy Honan is joined by Lisa Foley and Rebecca Horsley for a candid conversation about the things junior family lawyers really want to know.

Earlier this year, FLPA asked early career practitioners to share the burning questions they would ask a senior practitioner if they had the opportunity. Those questions became the basis for this episode.

Lisa and Rebecca share their perspectives on starting out in family law, working with senior practitioners, preparing for Court and trial, managing difficult clients, protecting your wellbeing, learning from mistakes and navigating the early years of practice. They also reflect on the moments that shaped their own careers, what they find most rewarding about family law, and the advice they would give to practitioners coming through the profession now.

It is a practical and honest conversation about the things that are not always taught in law school, but can make all the difference when building a career in family law.
