BYO Coffee Cup

Instead of using a cup once and throwing it away, it only takes a few simple changes to reduce your waste and do your bit for the planet!

Takeaway coffee cups are made from paper with a soft plastic lining. This means they can’t be recycled and need to go into the red-lidded bin instead.

So next time you head out for a coffee, ask to dine in and drink from a ceramic mug or bring a reusable cup from home.

Have your say on glass recycling in Alpine Shire.

Have your say on glass recycling in Alpine Shire.

Reminder: Have your say on glass recycling in Alpine Shire! ⏰

There’s still time to complete our glass recycling survey, and we want to hear from as many residents as possible.

From 1 July 2027, new State Government rules mean glass won’t be allowed in household recycling bins. What comes next for Alpine Shire depends on what works best for our community, and your feedback will help shape that.

Your input will help Council:
✅ Understand how you currently manage glass
✅ Explore whether local drop‑off points could work
✅ Determine if a kerbside glass bin is needed

This is about finding a solution that suits Alpine Shire and making sure your voice is part of the conversation.

🗳️ Take the survey: https://engage.alpineshire.vic.gov.au/glass-recycling
⏰ Closes Sunday, 28 June 2026

E-waste: What is it & how do you dispose of it?

E-waste (electronic waste) includes anything with a plug, battery, or cord that no longer works or is no longer wanted.

Common e waste items include:
• Mobile phones & tablets
• Computers, laptops & keyboards
• TVs & monitors
• Chargers, cables & power tools
• Small household electronics

Why not put it in the bin?
Items containing batteries can cause serious harm if placed into any kerbside bins, including starting fires in trucks or in the landfill.

E-waste contains valuable materials like gold, silver, nickel or copper that can be recycled into new things.

How to dispose of e waste properly:
All batteries must be dropped off at designated transfer stations, community recycling centre or a local participating retailer.

This week, Halve Waste joined RAMJO (Riverina & Murray Joint Organisation) participant councils for an insightful site tour of the Foamex manufacturing plant. It was great to see firsthand how local manufacturing and recycling support more sustainable building outcomes.

Foamex is a leading Australian manufacturer and recycler of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS), with a strong focus on:
• Circular economy & recycling initiatives
• Energy-efficient building solutions
• Local manufacturing

We learned how Foamex delivers custom-engineered polystyrene products for a range of applications, including:
✔️ Under-slab insulation
✔️ Waffle pods
✔️ Protective packaging
✔️ Residential, commercial & industrial use

Why polystyrene?
• EPS offers excellent thermal insulation and strength at a fraction of the weight of traditional materials
• XPS provides higher compressive strength and lower water absorption – ideal for demanding conditions

A valuable opportunity to see innovation, sustainability, and regional collaboration in action. Thank you to Foamex for hosting and sharing your expertise.

Students from Thurgoona Public School recently got a behind the scenes look at what happens to our region’s waste at the Albury Waste Management Centre 🚛♻️

From seeing machinery in action to visiting the recycling centre where staff help recover and recycle as much as possible, students explored waste and sustainability in the real world.

A surprise favourite was the maggots 🪰 Students loved learning about the on site Goterra MIB (Modular Infrastructure for Biological Services) where black soldier fly larvae help process food waste from local businesses.

Check what’s accepted in your bin ♻️

Recycling works best when the right items go in the right bin.

Sorting items correctly helps recover more valuable materials, supports a more efficient recycling system, and helps keep costs down for the community.
