Governance, AGM and... Dr Who?!

We may never know why there was a Dalek pensively watching William St traffic from a second floor window on Sunday morning...

Final day of the Legacy Australia gathering and many modern veterans and families were at cenotaphs across the country remembering MEAO and Afghanistan.

Legatee Jo Lovell laid a wreath at the AWM honouring the service of all those Navy personnel who served during the 21 year conflict.
Another Launceston Navy veteran, widow and Friend of Legacy, Amy Vickers delivered the key note address at Launceston Cenotaph.

Back in North Sydney, some of us were fighting to keep up with the combined strike force that was the LAI Independent Governance Review.

Hard hitting, direct and extremely confronting, the impact of the Review delivery reverberated long into the AGM special resolutions and directives.

Whilst profoundly disconcerting for many, the Review offers Legacy two stark options:
evolution or extinction.

If widows and children can survive losing their loved one, pretty confident Legacy can endure structural reform necessary to continue supporting our beneficiaries...

Architecture Day 2: the beautiful Victorian era masonry of Shore Grammar School, North Sydney. The rather picturesque working venue for 2026 National Conference - and Bradfield's famous coat hanger in the background!

P.s you might be very surprised how many attendees were seen google searching the school motto, 'vitae lampada tradunt' and who had never learnt to recite Sir Henry Newbolt's famous poem at school.

Perhaps it's just the cricket and military history tragics amongst us...

Legacy Australia 's 2026 Annual National Conference kicked off in architectural magnificence yesterday.

The simple but elegaic Memorial Service was held outside the art deco splendour of Hyde Park's Pool of Reflection and ANZAC Memorial before a reception at the gothic crenellation and Tudor elegance of Government House, Macquarie Point.

Great to see Tasmanian veteran Mark Direen Point and Shoot photography exhibition at the Memorial prior to the service, too.

☆$120K in disbursements, bequests and 3rd party fund-raising
☆$134K in IT, administrative support and social media platforms for fund-raising
$13K - sales of Legacy Flame Grenville, an initiative of our sister club Hobart Legacy

What do we do?
Legacy strives to ensure that the partners and children of veterans who gave their lives or health in recognised military service, can fully realise their potential.

Why does Legacy strive?
To ensure that no dependant of a veteran suffers financial or social disadvantage as a result of their loved one's death or injury from service.

How does Legacy achieve that?
☆Care and compassion - connecting beneficiaries with the most appropriate health and well being services.
☆Provision of Support - grief and hardship support, financial assistance, advice and emergency accommodation.
☆Overcoming social isolation - Legacy clubs conduct camps, activities, personal visitations, competitions, transport and mobility assistance; and social, recreational and educational activities.
☆Advocacy - locally, nationally Legacy lobbies Government bodies on behalf of widows and children, provides high quality advocacy services and represents beneficiaries with other ESOs.

A bit closer to home, some Tasmanian Legacy stats:
♡ Hobart Legacy supports 368 beneficiaries and 33 dependants across a population of approx 300,000 people.

In true Tasmanian tradition, the demarcation line for the South is Strahan across to Swansea.

♡ Launceston Legacy supports 409 beneficiaries and 13 dependants across approx 250, 000 people, including the often forgotten residents of the Bass Strait Islands.

What is Legacy's biggest achievement this year?

Chair Mark Lax reports that the revitalisation of the Code of Legacy which expanded Legacy's mission to include all deceased veterans and those who have given their health, not just those who have rendered operational service.
